I am looking to pick up a newer Dodge Cummins later this year. Brand new is a little $$ for my blood, and I am not sold on the 6.7 Cummins. I work with several guys that own them and average 11-12 Daily driving and worse when towing

I also know a lot of guys with the 5.9 getting 19-21 Average and 15-18 towing.

I am really leaning toward an 06-07 with the 5.9, 6 spd manual, and Mega Cap is a plus.

Basically can anybody here sell me on the 6.7, or on the new Dodge 5 or 6 spd autos?

Just found this one. I am not a fan of DRW, but this just looks :saweet:

I know it's not what you're looking for but I have to dispell the numbers. I own an 06 2500 5.9 4x4 6spd Mega Cab (bone stock) and the mileage is lower than what you've been told - I consistanly get 15 around town, 19 hwy and around 11 towing. Other folks may get higher because of tuners, better driving habits or mine just may be fat but I've never gotten the great numbers others say they get.

I can honestly say that, aside from the cup holders, I love my truck.

That said, an 07 5.9 is probably "the one to buy". The 05 & 06 cloth interiors stain painfully easy, water stains my seats - no chit. Both the 05 & 06 can be prone to trailer lighting issues. As I understand it these problems were fixed on the 07's.

Oh yeah I know there are lots of variables. One guy has an 05 and the other has an 07 both with the 5.9. AFE intakes and some kind of exhaust both average mid to high teens towing.

We drove home from Reno in my buddies 05 pulling a 18' enclosed trailer with 5 Harleys inside, over 2k of rock in the back and 4 adults plus luggage and got 16 avg for the trip with 3 mountain passes.

Maybe not the norm, but the 5.9 seems capable of pretty damn good mileage, and the 6.7 seems to be plagued by horrible mileage.

I was reading on the Cummins forum one guy was averaging 9mpg in his new 6.7

I mean come on my V3500 gets 8!

I never knew there was any difference between 06-07

That's damn good on mileage. My 08 1500 4x4 5.9 with MDS only gets 13-14 city and 15-17 highway.

Sorry, ya'll at talking diesel, not gas. I had a brain fart.

My buddy had a Dodge 1 ton with the 5.9 and he used to drive cross country hauling airstream trailers and rock climbing walls until the engine blew up on him back east somewhere so he left the truck at a dealer and drove off in a brand new 2008 with the 6.7 and said he was MUCH happier with it over the 5.9. He said it pulled alot harder and got better mileage. I can call him tomorrow and ask what mileage he was getting if you want. As a matter of fact I was just talkiing to him last night about it. He told me he was going to pull all the exhaust off and run a 5" straight pipe and i reminded him of the new smog law that went into effect January 1st this year about smogging all diesel trucks 1998-newer under 14,000 lbs. He said his is 14,030 lbs GVWR so that makes him excempt from the new smog law.

Smog Certification for Diesel-Powered Vehicles

Effective January 1, 2010, smog emission inspections are required for diesel-powered vehicles manufactured in or after 1998, and have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 14,000 pounds or less for original registrations and transfers. Biennial smog inspection requirements will be phased-in beginning with a registration renewal date of April 30, 2010.

I dont have a diesel, I have an 04 2500 with the hemi on 35's, and i tow my blazer with no problem. Just my .02 cents I get about 10 mpg towing.

I just got off the phone with my buddy and he said he gets 22-23 on average on the highway empty and he gets 14-18 towing depending on the weight of what he's towing with his 2008 Dodge 6.7

i call shenanigans. i'm not trying to insult your friend's integrity, but i seriously doubt he's getting that on a stock engine. there is no way the new diesels are getting the same mileage or better that the last gen. the manufacturers knew that when they came out with these new engines. the new exhaust systems w/ the new filters are too restrictive. that's why they had to go to bigger displacements, to make up for the loss of power the new emissions standards were going to cause. bigger displacement = more fuel. and on top of the restrictions in the exhaust, the new computer systems dump fuel into the particulate filter to burn of the collected particles. so they are wasting fuel in the exhaust system not to make the vehicle go. the manufacturer expected to lose up to 5 mpg compared to the last gen. engines because of this.

i have an '05 cummins and i tend to drive pretty conservatively. i get anywhere from 14 (winter) to 18 mpg mixed driving, depending on the ratio of short trips to long. all the little 5 mile trips to the store really kills the mileage this time of year when the engine never warms up. i'll get 17-21 on the highway. keeping it at or under 65 will get the best mileage. i lose 1-2 mpg for ever 5 mph over 65. i usually get 12.5-13.5 towing, and i never go over 65 when i tow.

oh and MT, that's a nice truck and BIG. i wouldn't want to drive it around parking lots everyday. $30k seems pretty expensive too.

I was talking with him this morning and he did say that his has the 6 speed auto trans and either 3.68 or 3.73 gearing he couldn't remember the actual number but he did say that if you have 4.10 or numerically higher gearing you can forget about getting mileage like he's getting. I'm also not sure what kind of "emissions" stuff is on this rig as he bought it out of state back east somewhere when his 03 dodge croaked on him while he was working. His 03 was the 5.9 and he said this truck definately gets BETTER MPG than the 5.9 did.

I agree thats abnormally high mileage for the 6.7. I've read if you do the particulate filter delete you can get a few MPGs, but thats around 2k and from what I've heard it will void the warranty.

Scott is this a 4x4? Crew Cab?

I could see a PF and EGR delete with a good exhaust and intake maybe a tuner getting that kind of mileage on long trips especially a standard cab 2wd or something a little lighter than normal :wink1:

Thanks for the feedback.

Anybody else own one?

Well I already drive my V3500 Crew long bed everywhere :D That seems about the avg price for 06-07 with the 5.9 Manual and the one I posted is a Laramie with good mileage. I think people know the 5.9 manual is a rare sought after combo

Yes, it is a 4x4 crew cab. My buddy Dave said if you want to talk with him i can give you his number and he would be happy to talk with you about it.

I have an 2003 3500 with 33" tires and I average 15.5 in town in the winter and 16.5 in town summer. Highway I seem to get 18 regardless of the season, that's at 75-80 mph. My trans is slipping slightly while accelerating do to a couple mods I have done, so I'm sure that hurts my in town mileage.

I have the banks sixgun, 50hp injectors and the usual intake and exhaust mods so I'm sure once I put a upgraded trans in that my highway mileage will increase some. Probably 1 maybe 2, but I'd be happy with even 1 mpg.

I know my truck can get over 20 mpg but to get that you have to stay around 65, 60 is best in mine, and have a very little foot on throttle. Thing is here in good old Jersey if you drive that slow you Will be forced of the road by the other drivers :haha: and the cummins doesn't like to be babied too much if any, it just wants to work and hard :D. I can always tell when I've been babing it too much, mileage is up but the engine starts acting a little funny. If I work it hard some for 40-50 miles its all good then.

As for the guy with a 6.7 claiming 23+ mpg, I highly doubt it. Its possible to get close to 18 if you pull as the emissions crap off. Most people with them average 13 from what I've seen/read and that's empty. Towing heavy seems around 9.

My dad has an 2006 megacab with the 5.9 all stock and he averages 16 overall.

My buddy did say at 70mph the rpms are only 1600. He also said he can go 600 miles on 26 gallons of fuel on average which equates to 23.07 mpg. :dunno:

My truck turns about 1900 rpms at 70. So 300 rpms less will certainly help with mileage. Not really sure otherwise. :dunno:

How is he calculating his mileage? By using the overhead or by hand? All my numbers are done by hand. In its current form if you go by my trucks overhead it shows mileage is over 20 in town, but when done by hand I get the same 15.5.

For some reason even when stock the overhead is usually high on the mileage numbers. Least I know both my truck and my dads are.

all i know is Dave Smith is focking huge

Yes they are! I am pretty sure they will work a deal with me as a MT resident as well so I dont have to pay sales tax which is awesome.

I am not ready to buy right now, or I would probably be over there making a deal on that truck, but will most likely go through them.

Sure I'll take his number Scott.

I have one of the last of the 5.9's in my '07 dually 4 door SLT w/6speed manual 4x4..

avg is 16.1 unloaded....11-13 loaded with my truggy and a 4 wheeler in tow..

my 03 dually 5.9 6 spd manual 2 wheel drive got very high mileage...

I could squeeze out 23-24 mpg....and get over 600 miles out of a tank...

Whatever you do, I think it will be a great idea to do business with Dave Smith Motors. Talk to Marty Gibson in sales and he will help you out.
