:D i have a cucv axle with an open carrier and 4.56 gears. im wondering, do i need to pull the ring and pinion out to install this, or can it be done in the axle, basically can i pull the spider gears/sliding pin thing out with it all bolted up???? i searched, but came up with nothing. thanks.

damn it, i meant lock right(changed title) im tired...and going to bed....
thanks again

I had one in my old crew cab, it is a complete carrier so you will need to swap the entire diff. Not a complete r&p set up but a good portion of one. For a spider gear type swap like you described try something like a Lock Rite (not the strongest locker but no gear set up required).

My 1st reply was about a Trac Lock (prior to your edit). :wink1:

I put a lock right in my D60 front, and I'm loving it. It's a lunchbox locker, so I was able to install it in-axle. Just pull the cover, the hubs, shafts, spider gears, then slip it in there. Pretty easy all in all, probably comes with good directions if you need it.

IIRC, sometimes you do still have to pull the carrier for a drop in locker. On the bigger ratios the ring gets thicker to make up for the smaller pinion (so they still touch each other), in these cases the ring overlaps the centerpin and must be removed before the pin will come out.

You do not need to pull the carrier on a D60 with 4.56 to install a Lock rite. I did two Q4 of 2006...you can get the center pin out, but only one way, if it hits, spin the assembly around and it will come out.

I did mine in 1.5hrs didn't have to remove the carrier either. If the crossshaft hits the gears, you may need to file one of two teeth down a little (.010).

I did a lockright in my front 10 bolt and I had to remove the carrier. Ive heard others say that sometimes you have to remove the carrier and sometimes you dont. Maybe on a D60 you wont have to. On my 10 bolt with 4.56 gears, there was no way of getting the lockright in without removing the carrier and removing the ring gear also. Not a big problem because the carrier is pretty much cake to take out.

I have one in my D60 4:56's , didn't have to remove the carrier.
Just follow the install instructions , pretty straight forward

I had the exact same experience- D60 & 4.56s, hits the tooth one way but slides out the other.

cool guys...thanks alot. i think im buy it(the lock right) i got a line on one for 200bucks. i only wheel mud, but would love to have actual 4wheel drive, instead of 3wheel drive. im gonna run the stock stubs for now since i just bought new premium warn hubs for it. i think ill run the stock ujoints too. i'd rather that be my weak link than the hubs/stubs. thanks again guys

through a buddy of mine who bought it for an old truck, but never used it. it's brand new in the box. while my axle is out(not yet installed) and being rebuilt, i figured i may as well do it now you know.
