Why are trailers springunders?

spring under axles help to keep the deck lower to the ground.

thats the big part of it.
another part is the fact that a spring under can use a slightly softer spring and use more of the spring rate.
thats not worded right.
think of it this way. you do a spring over on a jeep and the same factory springs "seem" softer. so the opposite applies to spring under. the same spring seems firmer.
kind of a different perspective, and it is mainly for deck height.

It's not unheard of to spring over a trailer to get it to ride level behind a tow rig though.

That is very true, that is the first thing I did with my 28 foot camp trailer after I bought it. Switched it from a spring under to a spring over. It got the tongue of the trailer higher for level, plus raised the body of the trailer up for ground clearance.
It's not unheard of to spring over a trailer to get it to ride level behind a tow rig though.

Those of you with nice new tow rigs know exactly what I'm talking about. New trucks sit 4-6" taller than the trucks of yesteryear, and that's why it has become quite popular.
That's one nice thing about my new trailer, it has an adjustable coupler. I'll be able to adjust to any size trailer or hitch setup that I've got available right then and there by taking two bolts out and moving it.
Not trying to toot my own horn or anything, but the adjustable coupler is a very nice option for any of y'all that are looking into trailers. It was a $50 option that I didn't end up paying for because I drive a hard bargin at the dealership. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Think maybe the spring over also gives it different handling characteristics.

I wouldn't say the spring over changes the handling all that much, but the increased height gained from it certainly will. That is why I didn't get a deck over trailer.

Actually if it was a driven axle, the spring over would make it less stable (spring wrap) but since on a trailer it's coasting that is not an issue.
sway on the other hand would be an issue.
