Why did GM revert to the np205 in 1980 on the K5?

Because the full-time craze was over and maximum fuel economy was the new goal.
The 205 was still available in manual transmission K trucks throughout most of the 70’s but just in 1980 it was one stop shopping with the 205 as the only choice no matter who or what was shifting the gears in the tranny.

My 79 came with a 205...

Yep, NP205 was the only option in GM trucks in 1980.

1979 was the last year for the NP203 option, 1981 was the beginning of NP208's, so 1980 is an unusual year where there is only one transfer case available (NP205). You could get an NP205 as an option in any of the 70's GM trucks and in most of the 81-91 1 tons.
