Why do people take shortcuts

Cleaned out the SPOUT, I ohmed the body of the dizzy and got 0.00 and yes sir I put some heatsink compound before I installed it. I disconnected the battery for a few min. I need to go drive it again and see if it pops up again. My only concern is it leaving me stranded.

It shouldn't, if/when code 43 pops up it will go to base time + a little thats should be built into the ICM. I would avoid long runs over 2500 rpm operation if code 43 is present.

When I was working at a dealership as a tune up specialist some of the guys wanted to go to lunch. I went and washed up and as I was gone they took the coil wire out and replaced it with a piece of vacuum hose! Well, vacuum hose has carbon in it and with 40K volts running thru it, it will conduct spark. Shoulda seen their faces when I started it up!

I reconnected the battery and drove it this AM. Ran ok but I throttled it a little and it threw code 42 again. Should I just replace the ignition module?

Same thing happened to my friends dad,who had a '66 Mustang 2+2 he bought new--he read about that trick in a hot rod magazine ,"how to make a cheap anti-theft device:"...

We went to a cruise night in it once and we wanted to walk around and look at the other cars & trucks,so he opened the hood and put in the fake coil wire, made of 1/4" vacuum hose..

After we walked thru the place and hung around till it was getting dark,we got in the car,he started it up,and drove away...he noticed it wasn't running "perfect"--then I pointed to the coil wire sitting on the floor next to my feet !

He pulled over and said WTF?..how the hell can it run ?...and as you said, the carbon black in the hose was a good enough conductor to let the spark still fire the plugs..not as good as the real coil wire, but good enough to foil its use as a theft deterrent..

He later made a fake one out of clear vinyl tubing painted black..that one did work, but the engine would still "almost" start!..

As for a control module,I've only had HEI ones fail completely ,not "halfway"....usually they either work or don't..but I suppose one could develop an intermittent failure condition..pick up coils do that more often though..

Well heck now I'm reading about Code 42 and it seems most people are saying it could be ESC or O2 or a host of other things. I DID install a new O2 sensor the other day. Maybe the computer doesn't like that one? Only other thing I can think of is, when I disconnected the timing SPOUT connector o set the timing, I never "Cleared" the code. Not even sure how to on an OBD1. Off to Google
