Why is this wire loose and what is it for? (pic)

Excuse a noob question, but me and a buddy were going through the engine compartment of his newly bought 6.2L Jimmy and found this green wire loose and tied up around the pink solenoid wire. I don't have a wiring chart available where I am, but isn't this for the temp gage? And shouldn't it be fastened on the right nut in the picture, opposite the solenoid mount - which seems to be missing part of the mounting clip for it?

I might also add that, no, the temp gage doesn't work, even though the sender unit in the block (left in pic) does... Didn't wanna mess with the wire since I'm not sure, but figured that some of you could probably answer this in your sleep.

Haha, ok, thanks for confirming my suspicion... :D

Is there a GM part number for that male part of the ground connector still? Not that it'd be too hard to make something up yourself if there was not.

As for the solenoid wire (which I believe I did identify correctly in my initial post ), maybe it's hard to tell from the picture, but it is connected properly to ground. I've messed with those a fair share of times, but never had a reason to pull the temp gage ground, so that's why I was unsure if that green cable was really it. Didn't wanna give the wrong advice seeing as how it's not my truck and all.

But thanks for the extra help nevertheless. It's not like I couldn't have been needing it, I'm not ashamed to say. ;) You live and you learn.

Temp gauge sender only uses the one wire.

It looks like that might be the right wire, I can't really tell because it doesn't look like my connector. Mines whitish.

your temp sensor should be on the drivers side head near the front. Just a slide on connector. That looks to be one of two wires that hook up to your injection pump. It is raining right now, but I will go out tomorrow and look at mine for verification.

oh, and nothing hooks up to that nut with what looks like a broken connector on it. I'll get a pick of that also.

that green wire is for the cold idle advance. I will take a pic of my truck for you, and post it.

I didn't want to say anything but that was my guess, not knowledge. :D

Looks just like my temp gauge wire that mounts the my temp plug onto my manifold. Looks like same connector anyways and same green wire. Just my $.02.
Hoby

the diesels dont have a temp sensor in the manifold.
there is one in the rear of the passenger head and one at the front of the drivers head.

I think I can put this to rest now, thanks to the help of user EWC on this forum. The disconnected green wire pictured is actually for the cold idle advance, and supposed to be connected to a male connector sticking out the upper part of the rubber boot to the left on the pump (right in picture). Since that connector is missing/broken off, that explains why the PO just tied the cable up. Alas, it has nothing to do with the temp gage not working, it just means the engine might have trouble idling without shutting down when cold. The lead for the temp gage is indeed also green, but located farther down the cylinder head and not visible here. So whatever made the temp gage not work is not related to this wire not being hot.

As for the male connector on the cold idle, is there any good way to fix that without swapping out the complete part? And what's involved in doing the latter, should it be necessary?

If you want make the cold advance work and not have to swap the injection pump, you can put a piece of wire with a male spade.
Let me see if i have one on one of my IP's, I have a bunch and maybe I can spare one :)
