Folks, this is not going to be a good question, because I do not have enough information to work with. I am just hoping someone here might have a clue.
Friend of mine has an '02 chevy, 2500 I think. Several years ago, he had another that the 4wd went out on. I checked and it was the heated front axle shifter. After a while I got tired of pulling him out, and bought him the Warn conversion kit to convert it to a manual shift.
Today, we were standing around, and he mentioned he had gotten stuck last week. I asked how, and he said that the 4wd does not work on this truck now.
Since he still has the old truck that he has been parting out for friends, I suggested he pull the conversion kit off and see if it would fit.
I have not kept up with changes, so for all I know they may have a different way to shift the front axle in 02, plus, I don't know if its a front shifter problem.
Mostly I was just making conversation, figuring I would have to fix it sooner or later.
He said that he had a front U-Joint going bad, so he had pulled the front drive-shaft temporally.
I asked if the 4wd problem had happened before or after he pulled the front shaft.
I know, but you would have to hang around with some of my friends to realized that was a valid question.
He said that the shaft had been in, but then he threw one out that stumped me.
He said that the 4wd would work going forward, but not in reverse!
I have thought about that for a while now. I have come up with all kinds of ideas that don't make much sense, and the only thing I can come up with is that maybe it has auto locking hubs instead of the shifter.
Anybody here know if these trucks came with autohubs? And if not, any ideas why you would only have 4wd going forward?
I'm fairly sure the truck is stock. At least he has not put anything on it that I know of. He may have bought it used, and the previous owner might have put on autohubs.
Other than that, I'm stumped.
