Why with hydraulic assist do most people extend their reservoir necks?

I just finished up assist on my truck and had my wife turning the wheels lock to lock while I watched the fluid to make sure it was full. It didn't matter whether the ram was all the way out or all the way in, the fluid maintained the same level.
I'm also running hydro boost and I had my wife hold the brakes while turning the wheel with no problem.
I drove it down the street and turned while braking and it slowed and turned fine. I am going to install a cooler, but I was just curious.

Exactly. Even with coolers, more fluid means less heat per volume. When I was putting my hydraulic winch on, I asked what size tank to use. Told him that I did not want to add a cooler if I could help it.

He asked what duty cycle I expected on the winch, and I told him to figure on continous, because I went in bad places and had lots of stupid friends.

I once winched for 3 hours as fast as I could winch in and they could drag the cable back out.

He said in that case, figure on a gallon of fluid for every gallon per minute of flow.
My pump was rated at 20 GPM@1500 PSI, so I put in a 25 gallon tank.

Never had the fluid get very hot yet.

Ahh, I guess I'll have to find the post that 4x4high posted with the part # for that Chrysler cap and get another reservoir.

I tried mine without a reservoir and it would suck the pump dry when I turned all the way left (ram fully extended) and then push fluid back out after turning right. This is after an hour bleeding the system and with a cooler installed.

After using it for several trips I want a bigger reservoir and cooler, it gets hot. I'd also like a better pump than the stock one but since Im cheap its gonna work for a little while.

The fluid expands when it gets hot. That's why the Full cold mark is on the bottom of the dip stick and the full hot mark is in the middle.

From what I've read about it if you have the pump with the separate reservoir you don't need the add to it.
If you have the oval shaped one that is all in one pump and reservoir you will need to.

Even with a cooler and remote resi mine will still get pretty hot when I work it hard. Mine is all PSC stuff too.
