Wide tires on skinny rims?

OK, this is based on the driving I do in the sand, but the general opinion here (Empty Quarter) is that too narrow rims will have the wider tires popping off at low pressures.

uh... no, that's your little opinion.

a narrower wheel holds a wider tire better. think of it as putting the bead of the tire in a vise. the tighter its clamped (narrower the wheel) the better its going to stay put.

Not my personal little opinion, what is common knowledge among offroad drivers in the UAE.

Very interesting that you told me, though. It does make sense that the rim acts like you say, as a vise.

Are we talking really low pressures, like 5-8psi?

The tires we normally run are as wide as possible to give flotation, and with the least aggressive tread possible to avoid digging in, and with the softest sidewall possible so that they collapse nicely at low pressures, all three things resulting in a "balloon tire".

i run 6.75 wide rims with a 13.5in wide tire and i can air down to 4psi in the sand and i have never lost a bead yet and i dont drive easy in the sand either

Without beadlocks or any other devilry?

I guess I don't know of anyone who's actually ever tried... but you can bet I'll try!!!

So why all the fuss about wider rims? How come people don't just keep their stock rims and increase tire size?

Excuse the dumb questions - it's just that I drive with some of the most experienced guys out here, and we do 3-4 night trips out into extreme dune desert, no tracks, no nothing - and every single person will say the first mod you must make is wider rims to seat wider tires, and that mounting a wide tire on a stock rim will have it popping off... there's obviously some difference in experience here and I'm happy to come across it.

Here's a pic of our dunes, and I live smack on the edge of this desert.

I'm not arguing or disputing - I'm just happy to have learnt something new!
