wierd engine sputter

I can't put any load on it now. I backed it into the street to she how it was doin and I can't get it back up the driveway
If i'm looking at the motor from the front of the truck is the egr on the left or right? I thought it was on the left but it is a solid piece with one hose coming out of it. what is it when people are talking about compressing the egr valve. I took off what i thought was the cruise control mechanism on the right hand side of the motor in the back but That was compressable.

also can someone tell me where i can get a fuel pressure tester that isn't made for all these new vehicles that have the schrader valves on the fuel rail. can i buy one somwhere or can I make one with certain parts( of which please list if you know what they are)
thanks

Egr valve is on the passenger side of the motor towards the firewall mounted to the intake. I don't know of an off the shelf fuel pressure tester for these that's affordable, Rvmorsemachine.com sells adaptor to check fuel pressure at the TBI with a mechanical guage.

Just curious, you say you don't drive this much, how long has the gas been in the tank? Just because a pump and filter don't have many miles on them doesn't necessarily mean they are still good... An old rusty tank and crappy gas can plug a brand new filter or mess up a new pump and sock filter pretty quick. I've gotten in the habit of dumping my fuel filters into a light colored tray or can to see what kind of dirt an debris comes out, just a thought...

I totally agree. I'm gonna change everything out. But would bad gas cause it to idle well but not b able ti handle any load?

I think the best thing you can do is find a way to check the fuel pressure asap. It could be a lot of things, but until you start eliminating things for sure, we are all just taking shots in the dark... I don't think bad gas would allow it to idle fine, I think it would be an across the board thing, but I've had a lot of problems with things getting gummed up when not driven on a regular basis. I had a weak mechanical fuel pump cause similar issues. I could start up, idle fine, drive at part throttle around town all day, but try and pull a hill or get on the highway and it would just fall on it's face... My '91 blazers fuel pump just quit working altogether with no warning. Ive had partially plugged up fuel filters cause similar loss of power issues.

Yea my pump went outta no where bout a year and a half ago. Lucky for me I was 4 miles into the woods and with a bunch of friends who were drunk as a skunk. Needless to say that was an adventure gettin outta there. But I got the cfm tech adaptor comin in the mail as we speak so I wanna get it tested hopefully tomorrow if it comes. This has just been such a frustrating problem

what brand fuel pump did you get? airtex? if you check the pressure and such and find out it needs a fuel pump again, buy a good one like ac delco. those cheap ones are junk.

200 dollars later and......

well 200 bucks later, many a headaches, and a mountain of stress i found out i'm only getting 7 psi before my fuel filter. I ordered one of those cfm-tech adaptors and sure as **** the thing doesn't fit. i took the fuel inlet hose off the tbi and the adaptor is way smaller then the hose bolt. after i cursed for a bit i went to autozone and they actually had a fuel pressure tester made for the tbi with the additional schradder valve piece that bolts between the filter and the line. before i spend anymore money by just assuming the fuel pump is bad are there any other possibilities that could cause the low psi...... screen being clogged? not enough voltage going to the pump? pump being bad? those are the things i can think of. anyone else every had this problem? at all throttle levels the pressure stayed at 7. the needle never moved as i reved the motor up and down. thank you to everyone that has helped me up until now. this has been a real pain in the ass. im just getting so tired off spending more and more money on this truck that seems to never run well

Replace the pump. even if you go through the whole deal to remove the tank and pump assembly, to "replace the screen" you're there, may as well replace that pump too. I just had this happen a few months back where i lost most of my fuel pressure with a pump that was not more than a couple years old. I got into it and found a split in the little rubber hose between the pump and the hardline assembly. Even though the pump is still good, i had the new one, just replaced everything in there.

Here's a pic...

go f-ing figure

So I order all new stuff spend about $300 and when I get the tank down I see the wire harness where it connects to the yellow plastic piece hanging on by a thread. Im assuming this is probably the power wire. I would not be surprised if that's why it was putting out 7 psi. Does anyone know where I can get that harness. It cracked right by the plastic piece with no room to resplice it

any progress on this issue. I'm having the same symptoms as your having.

Yea I comply got the rift pressure I believe the half cracked power wire on top of the fuel sender is what caused it. I finally noticed it when I took all the old stuff out the truck. Im assuming the pump wasn't getting enough power to pump the full amount only enough to keep it idling

I have a 86 suburban with the carb 350 and it does just about the same thing. Bogs out at take off then runs just fine after it rolls a couple feet. Idle fluctuates until it warms up, when you first start it it cuts in and out real bad. When I got the it she ran fine but now from all the sputtering around I got some lifter shatter. I have yet to figure mine out as well. New pump, filter, choke, and it just keeps getting worse. SO my plans of building the motor up will come sooner than I anticipated.
