first i have to admit that my starter needs a starter drive, every once in a while it doesn't catch, but the second time it always does.

yesterday when i was flexing on the ramp, i shut it off and got out to look at a few things. when i got back in and tried to start it, it would not catch for like 10 times staight. i coasted down and it grabbed the first time.

my question is why didn't it enguage the flywheel while it was flexed?

i don't think so, the closest thing is the headers and thats 1" away sitting flat. it sounded just like it always does when the starter drive is bad, just spins, no grinding, no wierd noises.

dumb question because i know you would let it go to this bu, are all your bell houseing bolts tight? starter bolts?

just a shot in the dark- do you have factory style starter bolts. I know some people replace the starter bolts with a regular, off the shelf hex head bolt, but it has to have a thicker collar and taper down to the correct thread size. good luck

starter bolts are factory and tight, im sure the bellhousing bolts are tight, but ill have to check. i also don't think it could cause this, the starter bolts to the engine block and the flywheel is on the engine, i will still check because i havn't since i put the stick in there.

i think its jinxed

bad karma

coincidence

heh

flex it again and try :P
either way it sound slike new starter and or flexplate time

i can't put a flex plate in my truck...

its a manual :p:

the first time i flexed on my hill it didn't do it, i even flex it the same way, on driver side tire. but i did flex it more this time. i do need to change the starter drive, its the only thing wrong with it, can't have it do this at the badlands in 3 weeks (even though i carry a spare starter)

Mine just went bad too . Worked fine for 4 years , then started not starting once awhile on the first kick , just like heat soak , only a click , and sometimes no click , and sometimes with noise like it isn't grabbing . Still started everyday after a couple tries , so I wasn't stranded or anything . Just took the starter off the motor I have sitting to build for the 83 , and shes good as new again . And I didn't need shims either :D
