i found a guy parting a wrecked mid 70's K30, who clearly doesnt know too much about what he has so the price is right, but he is located far enough away that gas would be a killer if i drove out and discovered that he just had a dana 44. he says the truck is a 74-77... i know i know "check the d60 bible on pirate", i did and it gives conflicting info on when chevy started using the dana 60-- once it says 77 and once 79

i asked the guy to look for the D60 stamp on the drivers side of the diff and to try and get the BOM number.

is there any chance of this being a 60 if the truck turns out to be a 74-76?

thanks,
rick

D60's were found in GM 1 ton trucks from 77-87 (91 old body style).

You still need to verify that it's a D60 since so many people rob the 1 ton trucks of the D60 and swap in a D44 or 10 bolt axle then sell the truck.

Tell him to go out and look at the steering arm and see if it has 3 bolts holding it on or ( 4 bolts, in a square pattern, Dana 60 ) just that simple. Save the trip and the gas.

I have seen a couple late build date 1976 K30's that had the true one ton running gear, a few people have claimed to have seen a K30 earlier than this that had a DRW d44 up front, but have never seen one myself.

the weirdo dodge d44 that has the 2 studs also has the unit bearings, iirc. in the random case that it is.

as mentioned, ask how many ubolts up front

if the truck is 74-76, theres a pretty good chance it doesnt have a 60 under it
