WinALDL....UPDATE: new question

Re: WinALDL.....UPDATE: new question

If that is all there is, (nothing on the sides) then you don't have a serial port. Sorry. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: WinALDL.....UPDATE: new question

You also might want to try something with USB. You have two of those (little squares on the left).

Sounds like Stickseler might have done that from the post above. Might want to try contacting them.

I hear there are USB to serial port adapters available. I guess it would be a USB plug on one side and look like a 9-pin serial port on the other. Get one of those and then plug in the normal winaldl cable.

/forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif I'll check that out...thanks for the ideas guys.

(Oh, and nothing really on the sides besides the cd drive, 3.5" drive, and PC card slot thingy...definitely not the serial port I need)

Re: WinALDL.....UPDATE: new question

Question #3,587: What cable did you use for the cord? Just your standard 12/3 stranded wire? I bought 6' of God-knows-what at RadioShack today and it's about 8 different wires...I'm thinking they're going to be too small. /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

(Sorry to sound so ignorant...I know about trucks, I know about electricity and home repair stuff, I'm familiar with computers, I just hate having to do things 3 times over again because I used the wrong wire, etc. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif)

Re: WinALDL.....UPDATE: new question

It'll be fine if it has enough conductors. There should be no more than 1A or so going through there if that. IIRC, I'm using copper stranded telephone wire for mine. It was just something I had lying around...

Re: WinALDL.....UPDATE: new question

I've been reading up over on thirdgen.org about the programs that people have been using, and the USB issue has come up over there a few times. It seems at least one person had a problem with the USB adapter and one of the diagnostic programs (not sure if it was winALDL or other) so it sounds like an adapter may or may not work.

I would suggest doing some research over there if the adapter appears to be the problem, when you finally try it.
