Winch 101...What size sufficient? Warn 8274

I second that because I work with Cam and he really knows his stuff and he likes the 8274.

I see alot of good things about the 8274(and 8274-50) here and elsewhere. I dont think you can go wrong with that winch...

On my 82 and 86 K5, I had an HS9500i... It was very fast and pulled very hard!!!! If I get another it will either be one of those or the new 9.5ti. Nothing against 8274, the 9500's are usually a little cheaper...

I'll try and find a pic I have. Not long after I got my winch a friend of mine in a CJ5 got stuck in a mud hole. I had to hook two fullsize trucks behind me and block all of our wheels and my Warn still pulled all three of us to the CJ5.. After about a foot though the 3 trucks grabbed traction and pulling the Heep out! :D

This thread makes me happy.

I picked up a motorless 8274 for $75 a month ago. Found a motor on eBay for $150, and the rest of the parts (drive gear, bearing, etc) for another $60. Basically for under $300, (from the sounds of this thread) I have the best damn winch ever made.

:woot:

Hoss AZ Good deal on the rope

check out hunter off road . www.hunteroffroad.com In arizona. He has a navy equiv. of the master pull line. Thats where I got mine for 1/4 the price or so. Equal specs. Also a tip... go to larada's surplus and score some 1 inch tube webbing. You can feed the line through that if you have concerns about abrasion.

I have a question about the size of an 8274, if you put it next to, say a ramsey pro plus 9000 and looked at them sideways, which one is thicker? I built a hidden mount for my proplus that tucks it behind the grill of my 71 k5, I have the height to spare, but it's tight front to back.

If you poke around on Warn's web site you'll find the dimensions of the winch (I found it when designing a bumper w/ DP_90K5). If I remember correctly my 8274 is about 10" deep from front to back - it's big.

with a snatch block on the 8274 you get a 16,000 pound winch thats the same speed as most planetary winches

yunit is right, my 8274 pulled my loaded truck up quite a hill a bit faster than my old man's hs9500 pulled his wrangler up the same hill

This is an old post, but I did a search for my winch research. What is a snatch block?

For a good picture go to the Warn web site that NVERNUF posted and go to the winching techniques part.

A "snatch block" is slang for a load block that consist of a pulley/sheave that allows the cable to double back and be used in a basket fashion. It allows the winch to increase its pulling power but at the sacrifice of line speed.
