winch 15-20' from bat.. what wire

That is what that chart does. If you need/want it I'll dig up the other formula for R/ft, but the chart has the A/C industries accepted voltage drop printed right on it. Or if you feel you want to decide on a higher voltage drop than go for it. That 1/2 V is low but will protect the wire and keep full voltage to the winch. Just my two cents.

I don't think the chart is wrong or bad, it's just a little restrictive. The charts usually show data for a particular voltage drop and a few different wire lengths. If you understand the math you can calculate exactly what you need for your situation.

I agree that 1/2 volt drop is a good value to use when sizing wire for a winch. If it were a fuel pump or headlights I might shoot for something lower.

I know what you are saying and agree 100%. But when I had to do the math for my truck, I usually just guessed. (Did I just admit that in public?!) So I printed out the chart & stuck it in my electrical toolbox. Now I accually look it up when wiring things. I used to have it in my photo gallery so guys wouldn't have to wade through that manual, but I didn't save it during the last update.
