I'm looking for pics of front bumpers with winches. I want to build something as soon as I get a winch but I want to keep it as close to the body as I can.

So, what ya got??

Depends on your winch, and how much of the grille, if any, you're willing to cut.

Your typical modern Warn, Ramsey, etc will sit fairly far forward, so you'd want to bend the sides back towards the fenders. If you're gonna run an upright style like an 8274, that may change the depth slightly as well.

I happen to be running an older Ramsey that sits between the frame rails... it fit BEHIND the stock bumper, actually, quite slick. However, I wanted something sturdier than the stock bumper, so this is a sneak peek at what I'm working up for it, using 2x8 tube:

The sides are bent back maybe 4" from straight. (And yes, the fairlead is SUPPOSED to be off-center slightly =))

With a more normal winch that sits up in front of the grille, you'd have to move the center section of the bumper forward, and presumably bend the sides farther back to compensate.

If you do a search you'll find a bazillion threads on this... I've been saving any relevant pix I find and see stuff like these. Apologies but I didn't keep track of whose trucks these are, so don't take offense folks ;)

I'm leaning towards a warn 9.5xp, so it will/can sit under the grill/radiator support, not in front of it.

Well, my take on it would be that you should get the winch first, and then build your bumper. This lets you mock it up the way you like, and you find all kinds of little fitment issues like wiring, clutch control, etc etc.

But I think this guy

is closest to what you're gonna do ... see what I mean about sticking out forward in the center.

I am planning on getting the winch first, but I'm just trying to get some ideas first.
Thanks for your input.:D

I don't worry about it too much , the approach angle that is . I may when I cut the truck up some in the future .

I agree with dremu. Build your bumper around the winch.

This one is 8.25" away from the Chevy emblem of the grill... And it's a 12000 lbs Ramsey. It is atleast a couple inches larger in diameter than the 9.5XP.

That's 8.25" at the furthest point down low. And I did not modify the grill. You can see some others that mount behind the bumper that provides better approach angle on my website...

From what I have always seen the center of the vehicle approach angle is really set by the front spring hangers. I have rarly seen a time that the bumper hit before the spring hangers.

The sides right in front of the tires is nice to have more approach angel so that you can get your tires on something that you can't approach straight on.

Thanks for the pics guys. I was just going to put the winch behind the stock bumper, but I'd like to have something a little stouter than that.

I appreciate all the info/ideas.

I disagree. When my truck was closer to stock I used to hit the bumper a lot and I'm not sure that I ever hit the springs.

Now that I have moved the winch up 4" and back 6" and moved the springs forward ~4" (52's) its a wash. I hit both equally.

IMO on a K5 pretty much any winch bumper will stick out enough to be the limiting factor for approach angle.

Badmix, do you have any more pics of your front bumper from other views? I like the way is looks from the side view but would like to see it from a front view as well.
