how do you wind your cable to the drum?

more info added: my unit is a ramsey 6000 lbs winch for my trailer. this is the one i would like the info on. thanks to all.

There is only one way to wind it on correctly. Mywarn winch is wound from the bottom, if you try to wind it from the top it won't come out of the fairlead in the correct position. Most winches i've seen have a direction arrow right on the main body telling which way to wind cable on.
 
in the big ones like on tow trucks thay can be run top or bottom. but the winch has to be set up for top or bottom feed. . :dunno: :1zhelp:
 
My Ramsey, and a few others I've looked at, specifically say to feed the cable in from the bottom. Not 100% sure why but this were all base mount style winches (mounting bolts were on the bottom) so if anything I would think having the cable on the bottom of the drum would put less leverage on it.
 
My winch (warn 9500) said to mount with the feet down or to the front and wind the cable only from the bottom. I haven't had any experience with any others personally.
