Winch choices?

I found a used desert dynamics winch that came with a hidden winch mount that bolts to the factory holes. Pierce bought them out and still carries many of the parts. It is a worm gear winch and is very heavy. My plan is to go thru it and rebuild if needed. It seams to be extremely heavy duty. It will be slow but in a winching situation that is ok with me.

I have two of the DD's. Is yours the 9K or the 12K?
The two winches are identical, except for the intermediate gearbox.
In the 9K it is a straight spur gear reducer between the motor and the worm gear.
In the 12K, one of the gears in the reducer has been replaced with a planetary gear to give more reduction.

The 12K is slow, but really strong. I have one of each, and in many ways the 9 is better.
But, the 12 will pull much harder. Just be sure your battery is well charged. Its going to be a while.

I have bought three warn 8274's...I paid 150, 200, an 100 for them. Two from garage sales and 1 off craigslist. Owners of all said they dont work, motor bad etc. None, of them had a bad motor, all needed between 1 and 4 solenoids to function 100%. Ive had the first one for 6 years none and used a ton of times with not issue. Worst case scenario you buy a used one that has a bad motor, although I havent seen a motor actually go out yet, and replace the motor. The 8274 is easy to repair and will take a lot more abuse than many newer models by either Warn or other manufactures. I would be patient and find a good deal!

Never forget that a good come-along and some straps, snatch blocks, and some elbow grease can save you some weight and a whole lot of money. Sure, its not as easy as a winch, but it's not likely to fail and simple to use. A 5 ton come-along and a snatch block should pull just about any rig out. And its good exercise to boot lol. For the occasional user it might be just the ticket.

Been there, Done that, Bought a winch.:D

My father used to have a come-along in the trunk of his LTD along with a modified earth anchor from a telephone pole and some extra cable.

As a teenager, I hooked that cable to many trees, and from time to time screwed the auger into the ground and then spent hours winching that car out of soft sand, mud, and the occasional ditch.
We briefly switched to a 10 ton chain hoist. Easier but slower.

After I started driving my Jeep with the Konig PTO winch, and later my truck with its PTO winch, we gave away the other stuff.

I have had a couple of Smitty's on Jeeps and never had a problem with one.
I currently have a Ramsey Patroit 9500 on my K5 and it works great. I installed it between the front frame rails and cut a slot thru the front bumper for it. This site won't allow me to post pictures. I have several on another forum.
