Yesterday I noticed a Sprinter 2x4 van going by our house heading down the snowy dirt road and into the forest. About an hour later the local tow truck went by heading the same direction. I had nothing going on at the time, so I walked down the road and watched as the van was being pulled uphill by the towtruck's winch.

Even though they were on a fairly steep grade, the tow driver had the routine down. He spooled out his front winch for the van, and his rear pto winch tied to a tree. It worked great, and once the van moved 200' or so, the tow truck turned around and then used the PTO winch to pull the van. He'd unlock the winch, drive up 50', then pull in the van....then repeat, then repeat, etc.

Not owning a winch, I was impressed with how smooth the pull went.

Since a winch may be in my future, I thought I'd ask you guys about your tough/ difficult winch pulls. What equipment do you use, what wacky technique got you unstuck.
Tips/ ideas/photos...you know the routine.

If im not mistaken, Pirate has an excellent "Recovery Bible" that covers most aspects of winch and non-winch recovery. A great read, but a little long.
