So who has simple winch mounts? got a winch as a gift...like to mount it with nothing fancy and nothing high dollar, just functional

what do you have?

pics help

Diy4x bumper center.

I talked to kurt about that and it doesnt fit a NBS Chevy.. and they have no plans to build one

Ive seen puting a hitch up front but not really sure i want to do that.. kinda want it more permenant.

but i do like that bumper. I like the ORD one with the tube, but Geez $700, get a grip

I haven't ever done one on a NBS Chevy but the receiver mounts I don't like at all, heavy side pulls bend em and your usually nose down in mud when you need it.

Take off the front bumper and start building!!!:D:D

Takes some time but a winch mount is not hard to build at all

Here is mine one side

My winch mounts feet forward, IMHO this is the preferred method of doing a winch mount, not feet down.

Why would you not put feet down? is it because of the direction of pull?

id love to make one.. but no welder,

id love to make one.. but no welder,

Mounting a winch feet down puts the mounting bolts in shear, not ideal for winch mounting. Mounting the winch feet forward the only thing the mounting bolts do is hold the winch in place they have no force against them.

That makes sense, sounds like a better setup up to me since all the force is on the feet instead of the bolts

I have ideas for building a mount.

however, would be wiser to start with pre-bought one and work from there or just piece together one as money/ welder availability allows so its done by spring?

Im kind of thinking the later because I can make it how i want, but dont know if thats just penny wise dollar follish..

not up on what average fabrication cost are. (welding or bending etc)

I know what your thinking (i want to fabricate, and a welder would be a good purchase..and your right, but i dont fabricate enough to required one --one thing a year maybe--and the grief id get on why i didnt pay bills with the $500+ cost of one would be endless)

anyways..

what pieces are necessary for for a mount...

obviously brackets to mount it

a plate for the winch

and a plate for the roller fairlead

all 3/8" or 1/4"

do i need gussets? id like to use front tow hooks as a mounting spot to the frame, is that strong enough for an 8k pound winch?

i would recommend making your own winch mount plate starting with a piece of C channel and then drilling mounting holes in the appropriate place and also cut out for the rope opening and then drill holes appropriately spaced on either side of the rope opening for the fairlead to bolt on. Warn sells a universal winch mount plate but they are stupid expensive $130 +/- for the same thing you could make for probably under $30

so your suggesting to use C- channel to connect to the frame?

Make yourself some brackets that bolt to the frame and then weld the C-channel to the brackets. I'm thinking a winch mounted between the frame rails up front.

Yeah thats what im trying to do but keep my bumper intact unless, i go full and make a simple type tube bumper...then i can get rid of the bumper ( i have to have something to satisfy inspection because of the airbag sensors up front)

Um what year and model vehicle are we talking about here because nothing in the square body had air bags?

I know no one cares for.NBS trucks, i get that, but its still chevy.

I will hopefully be taking a trip to the metal shop tomorrow if their open to get plate/ tube.

I am lookin to use minimum 2" tube and 1/4"thick plate for the mount. If it doesnt kill the wallet

its not we dont like them or you .

you are asking stuff on a 67-91 solid axle truck web site for your 99-up truck . what do you expect :dunno:

lots of us here are mebers on a few boards to get the best info for each vehicle / hobby / what ever we need.

your basicly asking a brand X parts guy how much for brand Y parts and he is telling you i dont know i only sell brand X .

i am glad to see you make stuff work but if you cant fab or weld then you need to buy . and your coment early on about price on kirts bumpers you try and fab / make one for less :eek1: i have made some stuff and you NEVER get what its realy worth in time and materials in the end.

not trying to piss you off . just my point of view on your threads and questions.

We are getting off topic, the shop that i am going to is like $3-$5 a foot for tube and about the same for plate. if it cost me $100-$150 to get it welded and i spend some time then it can come way under that price. im not trying to insult him by any means, him and i already talked about it, its just not feasible to drop that kind of cash, whether it be him or another shop.

I had a k5, and ive been with this site for near 6 years or so sometimes on and off... Ive had a k20, broncos, but basically what people tell me is its not right for me to ask questions because people have blinders for k5 only. Well then it cant be all inclusive and would have to include everyone that doesnt own a k5 here.

I apologize for not having a k5, but there not a dime a dozen here, you cant get a dana 60 for $500 up here and people dont fab up here like down south or out west. its just fact. a beautiful K5 will cost you up to$10k plus here and a **** box will cost you $1000 but if they are used, there destroyed.

I do what i can with what I have.. A winch mounting question is a broad spectrum question that can apply to more then just myself..I have a normal home with a normal 2 car garage, where normal cars get parked i cant fit metal working tools, fabrication stuff in there, nor can i toss $1000 at a welder.. Not everyone can have a project sitting in there yard.

I put this thread here because i wanted to learn how to make a proper winch mount, that i could do maybe over time or make a bumper with what i have.. If i put it in "New sheet meta" then no one would see it or care...

"82355" i apologize for misinterpreting your statement

lastly, i dont mean any disrespect to anyone, or there rides..but why me and my ride....If i had a tricycle, Id still ask how to make a winch mount on it..it wouldnt matter

an example " just cause your a dodge tech doesnt mean you cant fix a ford"
