So, I decided to pull the drain plug on my winch (Ramsey 8000) and... gunk/water poured out. The winch still works fine... but damn i was surprised.

Alright, so to the question, now that I removed all the oil, what should I refill it with? The sticker on the winch says 'motor oil'... real descriptive. I pulled the cover off the outside, everything looks good, teeth are square, cleaned it out with a hefty amount of brake cleaner and sealed it back up. The oil that came out definitely was not 'gear oil' (it didn't stink like it or have nearly the viscosity).

Any suggestions or help? I'm thinking about just dumping 20W50 into it...

20W50 shouldn't hurt anything then, the second question i have is how much to add... there isn't a 'eyeglass' or any other method showing level. I know the black/grey/water that I removed only consisted of about 1/4 of a quart.

I would be inclined to say use 30W non detergent oil. As for how much, better look that up on Ramseys website or give them a call.

Thanks for the input guys, what I've found:

Gear Case: 20W, 1/4 of a Pint
Drum Gears: 140W, 3/4 of a Pint
