Winch problem...

I have a warn 8274 (8000 pound) winch on the front of the ford f-250... we were using it tonight to pull our other ford truck onto this guys trailer (he bought it) when the guys friend was letting out the line, I guess he hit "in" to make it stop (I was standing next to him) and it made this weird sound. The battery died...so we used his truck to jump our truck. He went to take the line out again and it doesn't move. We can hear something in thw winch...but it wont feed in or out. What happened? :confused:

No "freewheel" either?
 
The cable doesn't move...the drum doesn't move...nothing moves, it just makes a noise when I push the lever forward (to go out) and back (to go in)

If you're disengaging the clutch and the spool still doesn't spin it's either the clutch or the bearings. More than likely the clutch. Not very expensive but kind of a pin to replace.
 
o.k. just looking for truck buddys to play with in my area. and sorry for the highjacking of the thread!!!!!

How can I find out if it's the clutch or the bearings? Where do I get the parts from?

Some winches have a shear pin that breaks off when you exceed the rated load (so you don't break the cable and kill somebody). Not saying that's what happened to yours but it's something to check.

Just start taking it apart and you'll figure out what broke real soon. :grin:
 
OKay I will take it apart...will the part that broke be visable when I take it apart? Or do I have to dig through everything?

What about the cable? Is it all balled up in one spot where it might be binding against the mount or a loose wrap caught on/in something?

You said they were spooling out cable right before it happened, this is usually the perfect opportunity for the cable to bird nest and cause problems. The 8274 is crazy durable so, while mechanical failure is always possible, I'd be surprised if it failed doing what you're describing.
