I am cleaning my Warn XD9000 and I want to know what grease kind of grease you guys use to put on the gears. Will bearing grease work? Trying to find something easily availiable.

I used wheel bearing grease as it is designed for high temp and pressure use. Mine works fine and I have had no problems since I cleaned and greased it.

What warn uses is a grease called Areoshell #7 (I think the number is correct) you can always give their customer service a call and see if they know of a dealer/location so you can get some grease.

Are you saying not to use the bearing grease?

If you are around water Marine bearing grease works well also. The grease that warn put in mine did not do well at all and actually siezed the clutch ring and I had to disassembly clean and rebuild my winch after only 1 use.:o . I have worked it hard with wheel bearing grease and it still operates smoothly with no noises the clutch lever works smoothly also. I do not want to start a pissing contest this is just my experience.

It gets in water occasionally. There are several boat shops around here, good idea.
Anyone else?

No I'm not saying that, I'm just saying what Warn uses when the winches leave their building.

What muddytaz said, Aero-Shell 17, it is a synthetic aviation grease, got mine from the neighbor(ex plane inspector/mechanic), I saw it in a ATV dealer here, since most ATV's around here have warn winches on them.

I knew the number had a 7 in it. Been a few years since I've worked there, couldn't remember the exact number for sure.
