Winch Rope ?

i'd say yes. just imagine being stuck in a mud hole 110 feet from a tree. and that 100' rope would be more like 95 (guessing) in actual use, because you won't want to spool it all the way out, but keep a few wraps instead.

I have 100' of 3/8" rope on mine and don't think I could fit 25 more on it. Anyhow 100 should be fine and if you need more then that then you can always buy rope extentions or just use a good tow strap.

Just remember, it only needs to be short once to be ineffective.

IIRC, most winches only come with 100' of cable.

Here is a good source of ropes. And if you scroll down to the list, it'll show what your model winch had originally & recommend a replacement.

Happy wenching :D

Wow, I didn't know they actually made small winch lines out of that stuff! We use that same Amsteel Blue (made by a company called Samson) on our tugboats but it's a 2" thick line. It's pretty amazing when it breaks because there isn't any snap back when it happens. We even have a better line made by the same company called Quantum 8. I'll have to speak with our suppliers since I'm pretty sure I can get that small (1/2") Amsteel Blue for cheaper than they're selling it...

Make sure you have the room on the winch to spool on the extra length. I had 100' steel cable on my 9000 warn, and switched to synthetic (which I love!) and went with the extra 10 feet along with the abrasion guard, and the fit is very snug on the drum. Synthetic is bulkier than steel.

most people only use 5/16" winch line up to the 10K winches and 3/8" line on 12K winches.

Paul, your winch probably won't fit more then 100' of line if that is what it was designed for. The rope won't wrap as tightly as steel does most of the time. Your drum may have enough room to hold more then 100' but remember if you are side pulling the cable is going to ball up on one side of the drum and you have to leave enough room to do that otherwise you can break things.

If your winch has 100' of cable now I would order 100' of winchrope with a crushproof thimble. If for some reason you do need a little extra you can always use a strap for extension or get a seperate piece or winch rope extension.

Thanks for the replies everyone

I already had a hand me down form Marv that got one more season out of it before the end snapped off 25 feet . The unbroken part can be a lash or hold down for a tarp now , so its getting reused in a safe way .

Was basically seeing if the extra 50 bucks was worth spending for the 125 footer . Got to order one asap and get it in and on before Moab :D

Just remember to keep the new one out of the sun as much as possible to minimze sun damage to the rope. That is the biggest killer to ropes out here.

I have 100' of 3/8" rope on my 8274 and have never needed more.

If you need a little more rope you can always use a strap.

That stuff can be re-spliced! Use the remainder as an extension.
