I wheel alone lot and in the market for a winch, any suggestions on a size? I have an 86 k5 with about 1500 lbs of gear on it..............

A good rule that I have always abided by was that the winch rating should be at least 1.5 times the weight of your rig fully loaded. So say you weigh in at 6,500 pounds with your 1,500 pounds of gear on top of the 5000 pound rough curb weight, you should have one in the 9,000-10,000 pound range minimum. With that being said, you can't go wrong with a 12K winch.

The general rule is 1.5 times the vehicle weight. Most Blazers are fine with a 9K winch and you have to remember that a winch is rated for single line pull so if you use a snatch block that same 9K winch is now capable of 18K.

i bought this superwinch 16,500# for less than $900 shipped...couldnt find anythin n the 10,000# range for less than $1100 @ the time i was looking...

overkill on a winch is not a bad thing, the 12k on the shelf where i work will hopefully hold it up. and when i mount it i will prove that theory by hanging it from a tree. :D

I hope you realize that a good way to break a winch is to do exactly what you said "hang it from a tree".

you can get away with a smaller ( i wouldnt go smaller than 8000 lbs ) if you use a snatch block...

I have a 9k Warn running rope and it does everything I ask it to do. I wouldn't wheel alone if it's anything hardcore.

It's not a good practice to wheel alone no matter how easy or hard the wheeling is you plan to do. You could easily roll your rig and end up trapped and no way of getting help until someone finds you, and hopefully it isn't too late by then.

At the very least if you do insist on wheeling alone you should tell someone where you're going and what time you plan to return home and if you aren't home by that time then whoever you told should be out looking for you.

I do any thing nasty alone but, i spend a lot of time out in west texas and the best part of that is your alone!!! I just need a winch i can depend on, the 9500 is probly the way to go i use a snatch block if i need more pull. Warn looks like the way to go for a winch?
