What's the smallest size winch you would you run on a 1ton k5?

Specs 1988 k5 with doors and top/305/700R/NP208/D60/14bolt/38s TSLs

I'm thinking a 9000K winch with a snatch block would be enough.

9k would be the smallest I would think. From what I recall, they usually say that the winch should be capable of pulling 1.5x the loaded weight of the rig. Figure a 1 ton K5 is gonna weigh at least 6000lb, that means 9000lb would be the theoretical minimum. I bought a 9500ti for mine but, have yet to use it. A snatch block will double the pulling capacity but, remember, it will cut pulling speed in half (double the line to pull in).

i'd say 10-12K if you can afford it. i've seen jeeps burn out 8s and 9s.

A 9K winch will be fine if you use the snatch block and follow the rules of intermittent use. If the motor feels hot to the touch, stop using it and let it cool. Overheating them is the main reason for motor failure on a "good" winch. And install a circuit breaker or maxi-fuse. I would start with a 150 amp fuse. I've ran one for a couple years and have yet to blow it, but it does supply a good safety factor. Just carry a spare fuse if you go that route.

8274, It'll pull a burban. You can find them used at half the cost of the new fangled ones. I would steer clear of the gray market winches and the M8000 if you plan on any "max" pulls.

I've used my 8274 with the original 1.6? motor and it pulled my junk with no problems. Just make sure your brake works properly, it cost me a winch motor.

don't know the minimum, but this is what I'm putting on my 1ton k5...16,500lb superwinch...plus I've got 2 arb 33,000lb snatch blocks just n case...rather have 2 much than not enough...but i agree with the above post, an 8274 is a bad motha...

heres my truck after a stuck WITHOUT a winch on it...had to get an excavator to pull it out...

I've had a 9k Ramsey on mine for years, and a brand new snatch block sitting in the tool box for years that has yet to be used. My K5 is a diesel 1-ton that had 38's and now 40's.

One thing you have to keep in mind in what type of terrain you are planning on being on. If you are always playing in deep mud that acts like a suction cup than I would recommend a bigger winch, but for a normal trail in which you just get hung up on rocks and ruts or can't make it up a hill a 9k-ish size should be fine and keep a snatch block handy just in case.
