Getting ready to buy a winch next month and expensive well known route or the cheaper unknown model. Looking at 12,000 lb winches the first place i checked was Warn of course and found that my winch would cost me over $1000... cant have that since that would blow almost all of my budget after the motor and tran rebuild. So I went searching and found some cheaper 12k pounders.

Since i cant find much feedback on these cheapers winches i thought i would ask here.

The few cheaper winches i found are as follows:

I knows its kida a large question, and i know the saying goes you get what you pay for but are these cheaper winches just as reliable ?

Cheap chinese knockoffs
Agreed. Why are you so set on a 12,000 lb. winch?

Those winches are so slow that you can use a snatch block to double back a decent 8K winch (now pulling 16K) and be comperable in speed.

If you are looking for a cheaper winch, find a used Warn 8274 or buy one of these: http://www.t-maxwinches.com/winches.htm#utiltyseries

You won't be happy with any of the Chinese winches. Seems like half of them burn up the first time they're used

Reliable and cheap don't belong in the same sentence. Basically with a winch you are putting not only your life, and your trucks safety, but the lives of those around you on the line. If you want to get a winch, look through the classifieds, look at a Ramsey, or save the money to get a Warn. Buying something now because it is cheap is just going to cost you more down the line.

I think you should save your money and go Warn - best winch they make right now is the 9.5xp in my opinion - and you can snatch block it and get up to a 12K winch.

Or find a used 8274 like was previously mentioned

Ummm, 9500 lbs. X 2 = 19,000 lbs

Just a little more than 12K. Of course you can double pull with the 12K too.

well I agree with what all the other guys have said. The only time I would buy a cheapo winch would be if i were using it in the rear to compress my suspension

thanks for backing up my gut feeling, so goin with a smaller winch would be ok with that heavy of a truck ?

Found a Mile Marker 12k for $600

i know Mile Marker to be pretty good from friends that ran them.

Mile Marker doesn't have a very good reputation in the wheeling world.

I'm on a really small budget, so how bout the tabor series from warn ? under $600 for 9k winch. will be first time using a winch so i dont wanna spend alot if i f it up

I haven't personally used the Tabor series, but warn makes high quality products. So I don't think you could go wrong with any of their winches.

Just look around for a used Warn. I would take a used warn over 2 brand new cheapos. Lot of time you can get a warn fairly cheap if you know where to look.

Check out your local offroad forums I picked up a used 8274 and a new installed but never used Warn 12000 in the last 6 months for $600 each. be patient they will eventually show up I had been looking for a year and was always to late or didnt have the money when they came around.

I would look for a Warn 9500. They pull fast & hard. I have a Warn 12K and like it alot but it is slow. Unless your running a big truck with big tires in DEEP mud I would go with a 9500. If you are constantly pulling out 7K trucks from deep mud then I would go with a 12K. Otherwise a 9500 should pull anything you need.

I would highly recommend Warn. They are about the best there is in the offroad winch market. A Ramsey is a good bang for the buck winch but under heavy use I have seen them fail. My buddy had there Patroit 9500 and he broke the case of the winch on 2 different winches. The first was a possible mounting issue but the second was totally legit. The mount was rock solid and the case just snapped into 3 pieces on a hard pull.

If you plan on using it alot get the best, get a Warn.

Do you get paid for saying that??:haha: :haha: :haha:

Honestly, I don't have a winch, but I need one, and when I DO get one, I'll go Warn. I have never heard any bad talk about a Warn winch.

I'm hijacking this thread (I'm seeing a trend with my postings here:D ). what about the difference between hydraulic vs. electric. A little more spendy, but there are no motors/solenoids to go bad or heat up. Plus I've seem some with two speed gearboxes.

I REALLY don't like hydraulic winches on 4x4's for a number of reasons, but the biggest being that the vehicle has to be running for the winch to work.
