I'm sure there is a winch debate thread here somewhere but I can't find it. If someone could direct me there I would appreciate it. I bought an Abomb and need to figure out what to put on it. It's being built to handle a 12K winch. Thanks in advance for the responses.

1986 K5 going on tons. I wanna crawl. I will need it. I wish I needed it everyday, but I think that's true of all of us.:D

As winches may be fun to operate or help someone else who is stuck.
I won't to want use my winch everyday. That would mean im stuck

If you want to crawl you really need to consider buying this

He is local to us in Nashville area and it has almost everything you could possibly want. He has been trying to sell it since Dec and is probably ready to make a really really good deal on it to avoid parting it out.

You could sell your 86 or keep it and use this 91 as a parts donor. Either way you would be saving yourself a bunch of money and lots of time sourcing parts.

As far as winches go, I picked up a 12k Engo with synthetic line. Right now it is $480 shipped from 4 Wheel Online.

You can get the steel cable version for $370 shipped from them also if you are just looking for absolute cheapest price but the synthetic will save you a bunch of weight and is much much safer than steel cable.

Engo was a best value award winner in a winch shoot out that Four Wheeler magazine did a couple years ago. They aren't super fast but the price is right and they will pull you out of everything that a Warn can. Heck, they even outlasted the Warn in the winch shoot out test.

That's a good one for sure but I'm one of those crazy people that wants to build it, not just drive one already built
.

I have a Warn VR 12k. Only problem was the remote stopped working, so I hard wired it. Been great but I also got it years ago from Amazon during a really really cheap day or something. $420 with steel. Synthetic wasn't popular enough yet and was hard to find over 10k lbs.

Edit: I can't remember if it was normally $500 and I got it cheaper, or if $500 was the cheaper price and $420 was something else. One of those two anyway LOL

EDIT2: aaaahahahah $509.21 :D currently $800 :woot::haha:

I totally understand, but you could still buy that one and then just grab all the parts you want off of it. Whatever you don't want from it just sell and get some cash back out of it. You will still be saving a lot of time and money buying all those parts at once in a donor vehicle instead of piece mealing everything together one part at a time.

There are a LOT of winch threads here. You can just use the search function on the top and type in "winch".
Do it as the subject, and you will get a lot of hits. Searching the body of the posts will bring up more, but not as informative.

Since I have been involved with winches a lot over the decades, I have a lot of posts. More than necessary in fact.

Here are links to some of mine. Lots of redundancy, and mostly about PTO winches, but still some good info.

Warn. If you can't afford new then find used.

I have a donor heavy K20 already. My wife is a Chef. I'm not putting another donor in her yard, because I hate eating frozen burritos for dinner.:D
