Window tint

I have my front windshield tinted in 3 of my vehicles. 35% in my denali, 45% in my wife's caddy and 35% in my STS-V
Never been pulled over for tint.

My tint guy offers ceramic. Says it's not worth it.

He has a heat lamp in his office with samples so you can feel the heat difference. It does technically make a difference but the cost doesn't typically make it worth it.

.. this doesn't look all that difficult. I'm just doing the side windows on the shell and the driver and passenger side windows.

What legal darkness can I put on the shell side windows and driver/passenger windows?

So 33% for driver/passenger
And whatever I want on the shell windows, or so it reads

In az, you can do the back end.sides as dark as you like. driver and passenger are limited, and you can legally do a strip across the top of the windscreen.

50% is all you really need to stop most heat gain and UVA/UVB. I used to tint windows as a side job years ago, but last time I paid an asshat to do it in his shop. Made him redo it twice before I settled.

Law requires windshields have UVA/UVB now, so I'd replace the front one before I bothered tinting it. Plus it's probably pitted and scratched anyway. I, myself, prefer maximum light I can get.

How do you know going into a DIY project, which films will stay gray over the years and which ones will turn purple?

From what I have seen you just gotta buy good quality film, don't cheap out on it. I can't remember the brand it used to be that was considered good. The cheaper ones always seem to go purple. Now days you have reviews you can read also so that helps.

Suntek or 3m.
Only way to fly.

Most auto parts store stuff is the stuff that turns purple
