What size do i need? And who has them cheap? I need 2 right?
J/Y`s are out of the question here.

i just use 30A autozone or napa, but they burn out after a couple months, so carry spares.

or you can buy bigger ones on ebay, 40A would be much better, or 50A if possible, they can pull ~35A on startup if i remember correctly.

you can find more expensive options but i would do the 30A w/ spares or the ebay route

well there are 2 things..

1. I have a mess of relays.... 30a I believe I can check.... you pay for shipping and ill send them to ya... :wink1:

or

2. look for a car in the junkyard with relays under the hood...
nab them... nice thing about them is that they are waterproof and can be bought as a normal car relay..

Got my score from a 1989 olds 88
best one I have found... yes I know it is a wiring mess... but im going to redo it all...

it has 8 relays and 16 fusese.... I just unhooked it so I can start rewiring it...
but here is what it looks like and fit on the firewall with 2 bolts that were already there... that is why it is on an angle...

Where are you Dremu....

Yeah, what, a relay is a relay. If those things take that much juice, jeez, either you need a big honking relay, or two of your basic Bosch relays in parallel -- or a Ford starter solenoid =))

Seriously though, you can cough up $$ for a controller kits, or you can roll it yourself, and the other info in this thread is good. I didn't post up 'cuz everybody else covered it. (And I've not done an electric fan yet... I may at some point, either due to a body lift on the tow rig or if I wanna play U-Boat Commander in the 'wheeler, but thus far, the mechanical ones work just fine for me ... and I just bought a new clutch for the sixpack last year so I wanna get my $$'s worth :deal: )

1: Well my clutch is almost gone , I can spin it by hand.
2: I just want to be sure a 30A for each fan will handle it.
Root thats a nice rack ya got there ;) and if you have any 40A or bigger let me know.
Otherwise I have at least 5 - 30A`s new in the package.

Thanks guys.

I run 30A on mine and they have held up just fine, you can wire 2 in parallel for added confidence

I use a 100a continuous duty cycle relay to run mine. Was like $25 at napa

I was thinking to run the small one to a hot Ign wire then the big one to a temp switch..both on 30A relays. If it pops the relay(s) I`ll go to NAPA and get a bigger one.Sound good?
Or should I run both to the temp switch?

In most of the threads I have read, it seems like people only really need the big fan for most situations. If you are only running one through a temp switch, I might lean more towards running the big one ignition hot and the small one off the temp switch. Whichever way you go, I suggest you wire them so that you can turn them both off if necessary

Cant think of why I`d ever need to turn them off.
But I might do that later along with a small led to let me know that there on.And put it somewhere close to the Speedo or temp gauge.

I turn them off if I am going through a big mud hole, or if you are at a water crossing. Then you dont get mud or water sprayed all over

LOL pretty hard to find mud/water here.So I plan to just get them hooked up for now, before the clutch fan go`s out. Then later on I`ll put a switch on the ground wire(s).

I just take mine out of the junkyards, cross reference them on the net for size. I've found some on landrovers that are 70a continuous and 110a max. Great for fans.

My junkyard wont let me go wondering around. And wont help me unless I know a part #.
