windstar fan wiring - Don't beat me up!

https://www.ebay.com/itm/LINCOLN-MARK-8-VIII-TAURUS-2-SPEED-FAN-RELAY-HARNESS-W-O-A-C-OPTION-II/142041189953?_trkparms=aid=222007&algo=SIM.MBE&ao=2&asc=49564&meid=6c7405c0baf948d2bfb087489c8b44f9&p

this is the relay set up I have on my rig with a taurus fan..its not cheap, but it was well worth the money.

K85- the black is ground. brown and blue are low speed and high speed respective. you'll have to power them to see which is which. the install instructions gave a breakdown of all the colors but I cant find the paper. Mine are black, brown and brown with a yellow stripe. diff years/model fans diff colors. my high speed wire in on a switch in the cab. low speed is on a temp sender

So does the low speed wire and high speed wire receive power at the same time while in "high speed"? Would seem so if you are running your high speed off a switch without any way to cut power to the low speed wire.

I have since removed this but going to put it back in the truck. 1989 olds 88 relay pack on the firewall. It is awesome!!! has fuses and standard relays. Oh and best thing... had for $50!!!!

mounts to the firewall on an angle but 2 bolts are there!!!!

You don't need to remove power from the low before powering up high speed. Both can be powered at the same time.

I've gotta ask, cause I've gone in circles looking for the answer. My Googlefu is down.

I'm looking for which colors to use on the big fan. The small one is simple, 2 wires, one is black.
Big fan has 3 wires. Blue, brown, and black. I just want to wire them up in high. These are replacing my Griffin radiator fans, which means I'm already set up for relays and such. Not looking to change electrical, just looking to find the right colors for the high circuit.

I haven't hooked them to power yet but I've come across things in the past where I need to power TWO wires at the same time to achieve something versus different wires. Just wondering if this is that scenario before I go touching wires to a battery. :D

so what are your fans out of? I only ask because your reply here about 2 wires and 3 wires got me searching, and reading up on this... but then when I took mine apart and looked... both of my 2001 windstar fans are 2 wire!!!!

IIRC 2003, simply because I figured if there were changes I should buy the newest one available.

I only plan to run the fans on high. My existing wiring and relays are set up for that. I put power to both colors (blue and brown) and the big fan seemed to run the same. I want to try running both wires at the same time but wasn't able to with my makita battery posts :D

^^^ gotcha..

so interesting... 2001 and 2003 are different... mine I am guessing are not 2 speed fans as both have 2 wires... and they tie together each red and black... I too plan on running them in high...but small 1... on temp sensor then large on fan (or do the bmw dual temp sensor to which im leaning towards as I like not having to do anything and have it cool but reading most people only need 1 fan even in heavy traffic in the heat)

with a broken clutch fan... fan spins but can stop with hand, truck doesnt overheat.

I was explained by someone at Griffin that a fan will pull air from the least path of resistance. Which makes sense if it isn't super close to the radiator. If the second fan is not running, it will pull air from that space before pulling through the radiator.

I just figured what the hell, run them both, all cars seems to anyway.

I'm going to do the mod that (forget who)... someone did.. where they took their shroud off, put electric fans in it, and cutout the oem shroud to incorporate the fans.... so for that..

I feel the shroud will funnel that one fan pulling air through and limit side air from coming...

I'd have to go back and look for pics, but I'm pretty sure the Windstars are recommended partially because they fit fairly flush to the radiator as is.

My fans are 3-4" away from the radiator, at least, and while "path of least resistance" undoubtedly is true, in practice (at least in my case) I don't see that it matters much. If you had very heavy cooling requirements (AC, big engine, AZ heat, etc) then obviously the more you can pull straight through the radiator the better, but I feel that as little air as I must be pulling with one small-ish fan mounted that far back, getting good fans (Windstar) closer to the radiator, in their own shroud, is probably more than sufficient for most.

If they are easy enough to mount as is, that is exactly what I'd do. Worry about making them better IF necessary.

I think the windstar fans fit the radiator good enough. The side length is good but the top and bottom are a little shorter than my blazer radiator. (about 2" top and bottom IIRC)

If you use a single fan, like the 2 speed Mark8 fan, putting that in the original shroud would work out nicely because the shroud is a little smaller with that fan. I think airflow at highway speeds is better with a deep shroud, you just give up engine bay space keeping the stock shroud. (I personally like the openness of E-fans)

ok so people using the Volvo relays... I just have 2 single speed fans..
so 1 goes to 1 fan
2 goes to other fan BUT I'm going to assume on high... I want both so really the line for 2 should be tied back to both fans????

also I don't know the true pinout for bmw switch but I think center is ground from what I saw in all pics???

Way over my head. I just run 2 relays and the ground uses the trigger from both my EZ EFI and factory LS harness. That's all I know cause I run dual fans on both trucks, both on or off.
