Windstar Fans

The way I see it, the worst case for cooling is when the vehicle is at a stand still, idling in gear. The mechanical fan is at it's very worst here, while the electrics are almost 100%. When you get the rpms up, the mechanical can pull TONS of air, but at highway speeds you barely even need a fan.


A word of caution: use good wiring for the fans. Don't use cheap pre-crimped relay sockets (unless you at least solder the crimps). Don't use cheap pre-cimped fuse holders. Their current ratings are no accurate. A bad crimp in the relay socket can melt the terminals out of your relays. The socket technically didn't fail, but who cares? You don't have cooling either way. If you lose the fans you will vent your A/C refrigerant in a matter of seconds if the vehicle isn't moving and overheat the engine in a matter of minutes.
 
I was bummed that electric fans didn't cool my 78 454 very well. Around town they cooled fine, but at freeway speeds, the engine temps slowly creeped up and up into the red. They were Flex a lite twin fans, and they cycled on when they should and blew a sh*t load of air. After going back to a mechanical fan, all is well.

They were Flex a lite twin fans, and they cycled on when they should and blew a sh*t load of air. After going back to a mechanical fan, all is well.

something else was amiss... fans, mechanical or electric don't mean poo when at freeway speeds.. your ramf*cking more air thru than you'd ever get from a fan...
