im trying to get my windshield wipers to work. the owner of my k5 before me took out all the factory wiring harness and put his own in it and forgot about the wipers. i tried hookin up some wires to it and they only go half way.. do i need the original wiper switch or can i use just some toggle switches?? and is it just the 3 wires coming from the bottom of the motor or do i need to use all seven wires goin to it?? thx

ya i found this, my question is the green, blue, brown and yellow are they grounds or hot wires. and do they come from the switch or wiring harness that goes the cab. im starting with nuthing here, the guy who owned before me took everything out. i just go the wire coming from the motor, and washer.

Green, Blue, Brown are hot the second you put power the white wire, IIRC. The thing to remember about the wiper circuit is, it's a negative switched item, that is, the switch and module control the point to ground, so almost everything is hot all the time. It's what's grounded that's important.

If it's an '83, it should have a dash mounted switch, not a column mounted switch. The wiring is almost the same (at least as far as I've depicted), however the switch and module are one inte 73-83 years.

I screwed around with it for days on the bench when I wired my K5 from scratch. Trying to figure the circuit out from scratch. I can't remember now what the yellow wire does, but I would just tear out what you have, and wire it as shown and it will work.

so none of the wires coming from the wiper motor are grounds?? do i need the oem switch??

this is what i did in an emergency situation. i'd recommend fixing it right tho.

snipped from another thread:

i had to cut my wiring harness to make this work because i couldn't get a clean connection using just the aligator clips on the wiper motor itself. run the yellow wire to a ground. for me, a good ground was clipping it to my hood as shown in the first picture. then run the purple wire to a power source. this will allot you one speed: FAST. i believe the other wire is used to control the different speeds on the wiper motor. for me, this meant connecting it using the wiring i have for my auxilary head lights, and thus i had a switch in the cab. however, it could just be run over to the hot terminal on the glow plug controller, but to turn off your wipers you'd have to get out and un-clip it all the time, which would be frustrating, but workable.

sweet, thx. thats exactly what i wanted. which wire is the purple goin by thediagram above.
