The weatherman says it's gone snow next week in the Netherlands...:eek1:

I was thinking off swapping the wheels but I'm not sure if this is a good idea.
I still have the chrome 35" 12,5-15 Mickey Thompson Baja Claw Radial tyres on it....but I also have a set off the orginale aluminium 31" (?) rims with Nokia winter tyres in the garage! (these were on it when I bought it..)
The M/T's are Mud & Snow tyres offcourse but much bigger and wider than the Nokia tyres....so less contact pressure I guess.
Then again they have a different tyre profile and maybe another rubber compount.:dunno:

With which tyres do I have the best grip..??
And what is your opinion on using the 4x4 high (with lockers on in the front) on snow/ice roads ??

Can't wait untill it's summer again...!

The more contact pressure you can get, the better. The more biting surfaces the better too, but if you have wet snow that will pack a snowball well, something slightly more aggressive than a BFG AT will work well to keep the tread from packing up.

Horizontal treads similar to Bogger, Baja Claws, Pro Comps, etc. area really bad on ice because they don't have any horizontal biting surfaces.

Deep snow is a different story. Low contact pressure and flotation are more helpful so you're not getting stuck.

Front locker is going to make the truck understeer. I have noticed that they help with the ditch-dive-pull you get when you brush the snowy areas on the side though. I drive my trail rig when it gets icy and let my girlfriend use my stock pickup. It will make it up hills and stuff easier than the pickup, but I have to behave more as it won't maneuver as responsively. That's taking into account that I have 235/85 ATs on the pickup and 39.5/16.5s on the trail rig...so a more practical tire like a 35" would be a lot less effort to drive with.

Tires with big lugs sucks on snowy/icy road conditions period.
You'll want lots of sipings like these:

And I guess your Nokian tires have a similar thread.
The sipes are there to trap snow in the thread,
because snow against snow have more friction than rubber against snow.
So you'll need the absolute opposite from a mud tire.

If they have studs as well, it's a bonus, but not as important as the siped thread pattern.

When you say front lockers, you mean the lock-out hubs right?
Those should be locked as always when driving in 4wd.

Yeah sorry I meant those hub lockers...
But is it an advantage to drive your 4x4 high on snow/ice road....of couse you can't drive very fast but do you have better controle with or without the 4x4 high??

I think I'll swap the wheel's tomorrow.
The Nokia's have the "winter profiel with sipings".....but the 31" wheels will look very goofy on my rigg....but it better than crashing I geuss...!

4Hi is the preferred winter driving range...provided the roads are actually slick or snow covered. If it's just cold and the road surface is dry then you're fine in 2wd. 4Hi will just bind up the drivetrain if the pavement is dry.

just please remember.... you maybe able to get rolling.. but give yourself LOTS of stopping room.. i see too many people with 4x4's that go flying around... thinking.. well i have 4wd.. i can go anywhere.. then you see their face when they try and stop

i drove a 1996 camaro for 204k miles... gave the car away to my neice... i never got stuck with the car... drove it in snow, rain, ice, etc.... just keep a good head and i had cooper cobra gt ii tires.. not snow tires...

Your right that's a good point..... than again most people give me a lot room...I think there getting a bit nervous off seeing only a big chrome grill with a gold bowtie in the middle in there rearview mirror!
Repect my authority....you pathetic Prius driver!:D

I don't know how it's over there but here they put a LOT of salt etc. on the road....and that not a good thing for the truck!

And I hope for a long winter with lots of snow :D
Quoted for truth!

Good to see a European besides Jeremy Clarkson that hates the Prius:thumb:

Back on track: smaller contact patch= more grip. Siping=more grip. The 31" Nokians might look goofy, but you'll go much farther than the 35"s will. Solid tread block wide 35"s= no grip. Case in point: My buddy in high school had a truck on 38's and my little K5 had half-worn 31's. There is a slickish muddy hill near town we'd go and have fun on, and he couldn't make it one day, when I tried, I got up it, some tire spin, but I humbled him as he was talking trash before that.

Btw here's what happened to a friend with a Comanche just the other day :D

He ran Baja claw as well :doah:

Yeah, that's an ATV on the bed as well, but luckily for him, he had tied it down for once...:thumb:

OEPS....lot's of damage ??:doah:
I swapped the wheels today....those 31" look realy goofy....but the ride is MUCH better!:waytogo:
(maybe another topic but how much tyre pressure do you guys have in the 35" for street / mild offroad use??)
