Guys, is their any wiper motor upgrade that can be made on these squarebodys? Heres my deal, 84 K2500 with intermitten wipers. I have added a remote electric washer pump. So, when I replace the wiper motor should I pick one from a later model truck that had electric washers?

Also the wiper switch on my 84 K2500, is it stand alone? Im thinking the one on my 91 K5 has the wiper switch incorporated into the turn sig switch.

Lastly the wiper pulse module... whats the difference between the one on my 84 K2500 and 91 K5? The one on the 84 is no longer available while the 91 is.

I thought that '84 was the first year that the wiper switch was on the turn signal lever.

I out the washer tank with the pump from an '85 into my old '79. The bolt holes weren't a match, but I was able to do it fairly easy. Then I extended the wiring and changed the plug.

As far as the pulse modules, I am no help without seeing the difference. I have found a module that looks correct for my '90 Jimmy, but the part number is different and it won't work in the '90.
 
While we're at it, someone explain the "park" position on the wiper motor so it returns home. I knows we've gone over this but I'm a derp
 
There is an internal switched circuit that will run it to "home". It is on the shaft of the motor so that it is timed.
The intermittent function takes advantage of it, pulse the power long enough to let the park circuit take over.
 
My 91 wipers wouldn't return to home even after changing out the column switch
After changing the wiper motor all works great
It seems that the motor unit has more going on in it than just making the wipers work
 
I'm on the third. This is user error-head...
Uhhh, does the motor itself have a good ground? I remember seeing a ground strap on one of the mounting bolts, to bypass the rubber isolators.
I believe that my memory says that the park circuit uses the motor case to ground.
 
I believe that is what the bolt sticking out is for , but I don't know what to do with it.
 
Bump.... So no one has upgraded the motor to something faster and/or stronger? The wipers on both my 80 and 91 behave similarly, slow and weak. It would be nice to find some sort of upgrade.
 
If anyone finds something that will probably work I'll try it.

If you pop the snap-on outer cover from the wiper motor, you'll see the park switch. It can be pulled with no tools - you just depress the tab. Clean the contacts on that thing and see if it helps. I find myself having to do that like once a year or the wipers just keep running.

There was a thread a while back about getting more power from the motor. Somebody reported success by lubing all the linkage ends IIRC. I wanted somebody to try upgrading the wiring, maybe locally-mounted relays, but I don't know if it's ever been tried. A good start would be measuring the voltage at the motor terminals while it's running.
 
I've had to repair the wiper motors on a few trucks. From a late 80's S-10 p/u, 89 GMC Z-71, 90 1500 Jimmy, 95 Chevy 1500 P/U (2x mine of course) and others. I think that years back that there was a svc. bull. on wiper mtr. problems a long time ago, 20 years or more. The problem that I've found most every time was a bad solder joint on the circuit board. It's usually where the pins for the connector are soldered and there are some other spots in the same area. What I remember is that most all of the bad soldier joints have been on the higher current connections on the board. I've also seen problems with the brushes grease getting thick/stiff and causing the brushes to loose connection to the timing disc. I'm not sure what all timing info is started, stopped or timed by the disc. I've never had to replace the brushes but you might want to get the right grease. Alot of these motors will interchange. I used to keep one ready and just swap them during bad weather.

When you pull the cover off (small torx screws?), I think that you can just pull the disc off by hand, but it's been a long time, so be careful, I could have forgotten something.

Does someone have a wiper motor "rebuild guide" to help me understand how to take one apart, clean it, re-lubricate it, and put it back together? I can't seem to find one on this forum. I really don't want to replace the motor unless I absolutely have to. Also, I keep reading a lot about poor solder joints on the circuit boards. Is this true; Should I replace the board?
 
I think that I made a mistake, PWagon jogged my memory. I believe that it was the circuit board that I swapped between the different motors. I think that the whole motor was a pain to remove.

Don't think they have a circuit board. The connector on the right is power (Hi/Lo), which just makes the motor turn. The linkage creates the back-and-forth motion. The left connector is the park switch. The circuit board for delay wipers is mounted under the column.

Sorry, That doesn't look a thing like the wiper motors that I have repaired. I haven't looked in a while, but it seems that the one that I'm thinking of is blockier looking. I went back to the original post by TommyD and I guess that I'm reading it wrong. I thought that he was having problems with the motor on his 91 K5. I guess that must be the one from the 84 K2500. Sorry for the mistake. I'm glad that you corrected me because I've been looking for the repaired board that I had/have to send him. One thing about it, I found some other stuff that I'd looked for some time ago.
