Wireless winch remotes (UPDATE 05-25-04)

OK, I bought a Mile Marker wireless winch remote.

It didn't solve any of the problems I was experiencing with my ghettofab wireless winch remote. I guess I just can't mount the control box near the winch. Too much noise I guess.

It was an expensive way to find that out at $100 for the Mile Marker one.

So, I guess it just isn't possible to have a wireless multimount winch. I'll end up hardwiring the truck so I can both use the wireless remote and have a switch in the cab to run the winch that way too. It's kind of disappointing. Actually, it just plain sucks.

I suppose I'll chock it up as one of those expensive learning experiences you'd rather do without.

Current plan is to buy some small dual-conductor double-insulated wire to do the hardwiring (vacuum cleaner maybe? I'm tired of using orange extension cords under my truck) in my truck. I'll tap into it with the wireless remote and mount it in the cab. Fugly will get the ghettofab wireless remote setup and maybe I'll do a writeup on it when I get it done. Summer classes are kicking my ass so it'll be a while.

I dunno what you want a multimount winch for at all anyway. I can't think of any instances where I would want to pull myself out backwards, unless you 'wheel by yourself.

I think a multi-mount winch would be a pain, but also real handy, like say if you roll and no-one is near with a winch or something to flip you back over, you can get your multimount, hook it on the rollcage (if rig has one) and flip it back up. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

what if you are going forward.. through really deep mud..and the bottom drops off.. and your front end goes completely under so you are up in the air in the rear... do you really wanna pull the rest of the truck through what the front is under???

im planning on a front and back winch.... I agree though.. you always wanna go forward until forward prohibits ya... /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

People always say that to me. I explain. Then the next person asks. I repeat.

My truck is my daily driver. I drive through salt, sand, and snow October through April. The winch does not need to be in those elements. A cover only keeps out so much. Unless I hid my winch under the core support it'd kill my approach angle as I only have 33s and 4" of lift. I get hung up on my towhooks all the time, I can only imagine more crap that hangs low or another few inches in front of my truck.

I don't need another 120lbs or so hanging off the front of my truck all the time.

Can't steal a winch if it isn't always on the front bumper.

I do wheel by myself pretty regularly. It's nice to be able to winch yourself out in reverse. It's also nice to be able to pull my truck off a tree. The whole reason why I've wanted a winch is for when I go by myself. In the past as long as I went with another fullsize they could always pull me out.

I have a set of 20' long 1/0 jumper cables that'll plug into either my truck (to jumpstart other people) or to the winch. Therefore I can use my winch on any vehicle with a 2" receiver that has a battery.

I always planned on having a trail rig someday. This way I only need one winch. With a little bit of luck, I'll have a trail rig and enough money to permanently mount a winch under the core support. I'll then have the ability to leave my multimount setup plugged into the back of the trail rig so it doesn't hang out past the rear bumper. It'll also have side receivers for those moments when you're out in the woods by yourself with it lying on its side against a tree.

I havent needed a front mounted winch for myself yet
seems like the wrong end to extract from to me

I guess only time will tell, but if I was going to do a rear winch it certainly wouldn't be electric with all that space back there and that those PTO covers under my truck. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

My winch is protected from both theft and the elements by my bumper, although I do see your point.

Haha, yeah, but my plans are to stick a truck cab on a K5 frame so the box area got smaller. The batteries will go on the passenger side outboard of the framerail. On the other side outboard the frame rail will be a built-in toolbox. The bed and "fenders" will be made out of angle iron and 2x wood. Nothing behind the tires.

And I plan on running a poor man's doubler (700R4/NP208).

The plan is to make it really light... like 600-900lbs lighter than my truck and move as much weight as I can to the bed so I can run really big tires with really little axles (half ton). Well, big is relative. Ideally I'd find some 38" SXs for cheap. I have everything to do the project but the 700R4/NP208 and the tires.

I'm certain if I had a winch mounted to the front of my truck and I didn't weld the bolts it'd come up missing.

PTO winches are the [darn]...

but a little bit beyond what I need for my estimated 3200-3300lb fully loaded weight.

i finally made it back to ck5, only 11,00o posts missed in garage.

nice pto winch, too bad the owner cant wrap cable.

hows fugly2 coming along?

I yanked the BFG ATs off and put my bald 31s on it. People keep saying they want them but I never see any money. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif Out of sight, out of mind I figure.

I finished stripping the grill stuff off. I can now stand on the frame horns and lean up right against the core support. No more hood latch bullshit.

Rebuilt a Quadrajet and put it on there. Found out that sometime in the last month the battery took a [darn] while sitting on my workbench. It took a charge then I just let it sit there. Put it in the K5 and nothing. It wouldn't even take a charge. So much for "Die Hard".

I want to run it to make sure one last time that it really is that input seal. It just seems fishy that the bellhousing on the pump side is dry yet the torque converter is soaked. I'm wondering if something crazy happened like a pump bolt came out or maybe the pan leaks and fluid moving causes it to gush. Beats the hell out of me. Just seems strange that I stick my finder up there on the aluminum above the pan flange and it's dry yet the torque converter is dripping a month later.

I tore the tailgate off. I used the inpact on some of the bolts. Then I cleaned up all the glass that fell out from Steve breaking the window. I found out that the tailgate was a structural piece of metal. The whole vehicle leans to the driver's side now. I think the only reason it doesn't just keep sailing on over is because of the rollbar inside.

I started tearing apart the interior. Nobody seems to be interested in interior stuff so I'm probably going to ruin whatever I don't feel like keeping then take it to Kuru's. Most of it is "took good to junk, too bad to keep" like the back seat. I'll probably end up stealing the spring-loaded hinges off it and then cut the cover.

Mile Marker Wireless Remote Installed

I installed the wireless remote from MileMarker under the dash of my truck. I just couldn't isolate all the noise caused by the solenoids and the motor. I put a grounded copper box (aka Faraday box) around the receiver and it helped a bit but I still didn't get the range I wanted. If I moved the receiver 8-10' away I could easily operate the winch from 100' away.

So, I mounted it under the dash on the passenger's side. I wired for front and rear connectors. I also wired for a switch in the ashtray.

It works pretty slick. For testing purposes I stood around 100' away with two cars between me so I couldn't see the receiver. I also stood on the opposite side of my house. I didn't think to test it with the truck running though. I'll do that another day.

There is a video of it in action here, (right click save as).
