Wiring 240v 50 amp plug to my compressor

I had a 240v 50 amp circuit installed in my new home's garage. I did this to power my 240v welder and 240v compressor. Now I need to figure out how to somehow wire this. I won't be using both at the same time. The compressor only needs 15 amps so it only needs a 20 amp fuse/breaker. The current plug is a 4 wire, and both welder and compressor only use 3 wire. Should I install some type of sub-panel with a 20 amp breaker or fuse? How would you wire this?

I'd just change the current 4 wire receptacle out with a 3 wire one that matches your plugs. That receptacle has a neutral in the center flat blade used only in dryers and stoves usually.

It can be disconnected, scotchlocked off, and pushed to the back off the box.

Thanks! I was thinking of one of those adapters or just switching the plug out. If I switch out the receptical to a 3 wire I wonder if I should add a ground strap? I'd also like to add some protection to the compressor. Was also thinking adding breaker(s) in a small box just for the compressor since there is no off/on switch.

I'd put an on off switch on the compressor myself. But adding a sub panel is an option yeah.

You wouldn't have to add a ground strap either. Your 4 wire already has a dedicated ground. You would just put the 3 wire receptacle in place of the 4wire one, and not use the white wire... No strap needed
 
Took you advice and bought a 4 wire to 3 wire adapter. Then modified compressor plug so it matches my welder.
