Anyone done a 1995 s10 4x4 4.3 engine removal  Dont look fun at all the trans bolts are up so close to the body,I guess working on the k5 got me spoiled with all the room it has to offer !

Picked it up for my son for his 16th birthday (700.00 ). Very clean inside and out but engine is shot. I picked up a good used engine and will be putting it in in the morning.

Will I have to remove trans and all or jack up the body or what ? Any tips or tricks ?? Other than needing a shrink.:doah:

Once you remove the trans crossmember it will be much easier to access the bolts. In some instances people have drilled holes through the firewall and used a socket and extension from inside the cab to remove bell bolts.

I've drilled a hole in the driver floor board. Also lifted the body up 2 inches. If you drill a hole just be careful as there is a wire harness that runs right next to the bolt.

Damm, call me a pussy or whatever. I have been Installing my Tranny in burb all day, it has a 2" body lift, and it has been a pain. I guess I should feel lucky. It does suck its 4 feet off the ground but my arms are only 3 feet.l long. Not doing this again.

Good luck!

I have heard people doing this... Might be and option !

Thanks,Ill look at this option first but there looks to be two crossmembers one for the tranny and one that the torsion bars go into it does not look like its able to come out ( did not look to hard last night ) that the tail shaft passes by a good 6 or 8 inches it will drop about 2 inches before it hits the last one,Might be enough.

and one of these helps http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...id=355&supersede=&store=snapon-store&tool=all

then http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...id=324&supersede=&store=snapon-store&tool=all

the extension realy helps and might be metric for the bolts on 95 not sure. but that swivel socket gives you ideas.

I do have these and are some of my most used tools, Got me out of some real jams !! I wish life's issues could be as easy as going into the tool box and pulling out the weapon of choice :pimp:

You will gain a lot of room from the top if you remove the intake. Then just use a wrench on those top bolts plus makes it easier removing the grounds and brackets back there.Sometimes I remove the manifolds also then get the side bolts with a wrench there too.I like removing the wheel houses also if there easy enough and work through the wheel well with the tires removed.Whatever makes it easier I do even if it ads some steps but when swapping an engine you need to swap most everything anyway.

Once you get the old engine out, take a BFH and hammer the body seam in the tranny tunnel flat. Gives you a little more room to get everything back together.

good idea on remove intake. prob best to do intake gaskets now anyways as thay are super conon problem. leak coolent out or in block when thay go bad. :doah:

It's out but what a pain in the a$$. I did not know some of these 4.3's have a one use timing cover, says on the front replace upon removal ? I have to change it out for the crank sensor. Also have to change the dizzy but other than that coming along.

It's going to be on hold in tell this weekend got to go work out of town for a few days... Thanks for all your help.

finished,,, Well sort of

Its done and all legal, so my son is now on the road. Now I know how my Parents must have felt when I started driving !! I seem to preach to him all the time , So now the heater is not working blows out the defrost all the time and it's not hot.

All the vacuum hoses are hooked up ect.Looks like the dash will have to come out to even get to all the other parts... This suxs.

I have to replace the front axle in one soon. I replaced the trans in it already. What a pain.

Now everyone tells me what a PITA it is to get to the bell bolts? Why didn't they say so before I bought the damn rig?

I've owned my '98 Jimmy for about 4 years now and just got it back from the local mechanic after getting the 4.3 to run great again. Problem is the tranny. Its been slipping for a while now.

Has 162K on it and I have plans to get a remanned tranny in the spring or summer of '12 and will swap it out then. I did not have plans for the bell bolts to be a PITA to get to.

Thanks guys! For telling me this now. I'm really looking forward to the swap. Not.

Even the Chilton's recommends lifting the body up a couple of inches for better access...

Seriously? That really blows. Maybe I'll look into a 1" ORD aluminum body lift for the damn thing instead.
