Won't fire up

Anyone have any suggestions for my problem? I replaced the fuel filter on my 350, put a new battery, add a little gas in the carb and it wants to start. It turns over for a split second then once that fuel burns it's done. I blew through the fuel line to make sure there was no obstructions and also sucked till I got fuel out the line. I have a couple questions I guess. Can a fuel pump go bad from sitting(mechanical pump)? Also I found a red wire coming from my ignition switch that I have no clue where it plugs into. The only possible location with a spot for a plug in of that type is all the way on the other side of the motor, which I never remember seeing that wire ran in that direction. I did check the cap/rotor for moisture from it sitting, none found. I also tried to fire it up with the fuel line disconnected to see if fuel came out. I'm not sure if any should come out right at that point or if it takes a split second upon starting for the pump to actually function? Whether the wire is plugged in or not makes no difference on what the engine does when attempting to start it, but who knows.

im betting on fuel pump. you cn pull the lign off the carb and crank it to see if fuel comes out or not to comfirm, but the hardest thing on a fuel pump is sitting unused for a long time

So it should spit fuel when cranking it then huh? I thought it should, but was thinking to myself.."This was a brand new pump, so maybe I'm just going loony."

well....pumps are relatively cheap and having a spare can be good. Pick up a factory pump and try it. If it doesn't help, you now have your spare.
I replaced mine with a new AC Delco (IIRC) since I know nothing about the old one. The old one was working just fine, so it's now my spare. Hopefully sitting, the gas doesn't crap it out.

Well I replaced the fuel pump and it fired up a couple days ago. Today I go to start it and it does the same thing. It seems like the pushrod is slipping off the pump arm. How do I remedy this? Should I replace the pushrod as well add grease to it, etc? I must say it was a pain in my ass getting the pump in and keeping that pushrod in front of the pump arm. Reason I'm lost is it ran for a good 20 minutes the night I fired it up. I'm thinking the rod got sticky and stayed in the up position losing contact with the pump arm leaving the arm to slide over the top of the push rod.

There's a bolt in the front of the block that threads into the fuel pump pushrod bore. Make sure it isn't to long and hanging the pushrod. I've never heard of the rod slipping off the pump arm, the pump spring pressure should not let this happen.

I will check that. I did slide the rod in and out a few times checking for obstructions and it seemed fine. I guess grease is the common way to make the rod stay put while you install the pump. I was out of grease, hence my frustration.

I usually take the bolt out and put a longer one in it's place finger tight to hold the rod in place when replacing pumps. Someone might done this in the past and left a burr on the rod.Pull the pump off and make sure it slides up and down easily also give it a slight turn while you do this.

Damn Im getting sick of this truck. Reinstalled the damn pump twice and still... Nothing. Its acting exactly the way it did with the first pump.

Well, I got the pump issue resolved, now can't make it move forward. Tranny goes into reverse no problem, but will not engage into any other gears. I don't trust the dipstick as it say it's full after adding a couple more quarts of oil. How much oil can I possibly need to add to get it to engage? This is a rebuilt perfectly running tranny prior to the truck being parked for a couple years. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. It's a th350
