When you finish rebuilding your transfer case for the first time and everything seems to be right and the test drive seems smooth and nothing is leaking and your finishing cleaning up and you pick up a bag and find this...

lol... man that sucks. hey, if it was REALLY needed the case wouldnt be working right!

I know right where they go too, I am gonna try and open the back of it up while it is still attached. Anybody know if I can remove the rear case half with the tail housing still attached and the front half still mounted?

Reminds me of a short story…

Laying new carpet… big room. Get all the way done and notice a lump in the middle of the carpet. Other guy had a pack of cigarettes in front shirt pocket that fell out and got covered up. Go back and redo everything. Sucks… we all have been there in some form or another.

Thats funny!!

Yes, it can be done while still in the truck. May need to remove the tailhousing though. But that's an easy reseal with some black RTV.

One time I rebuilt an engine and when I started it I had no oil pressure. Never installed the oil pump drive. Bad day. Haven't forgotten since.

I was able to pull the rear half of the case off with the tail housing still attached and put those washers and bearing back in but all of the movement trying to get the case back together must have turned the main shaft thrust bearing sideways or something because after it was all back together and I took it for a test drive I put it in four low and something in there exploded pulled it apart and there are roller bearings all in it and no bearing wear the thrust bearing used to be, the planetary is ate up pretty good but after I cleaned all of the metal chunks out, it rotates but it's noisy, gonna go to the dealer and see if I can find the bearing and see if I can afford to replace the whole assembly, otherwise it will be a noisy 4lo

Ouch! Gotta hate that!

You may be better off to purchase a used transfer case to install vs buying all new parts!

NP208, I found a local guy that was able to get me the planetary assembly and the bearing on the spot. I realized that once the main shaft is in and lined up with the bearing, you can't pull it out or the bearing drops out and you have to take it all off again. Now I just need to be patient and wait for another pair of hands so I can get it back together right this time.

Not to laugh at your situation,,,,,but I have pull this gag on so many of my friends....

They just finish up a huge engine job or trans rebuild ,,, get it all installed and right before they go to fire it up,,,, I just "happen" to find a set of rod bearings or a piston ring or a thrust washer laying on the bench under a rag or in a box.....:whistle::whistle:

sorry yours was REAL !!!! :eek1:

Man I am so sorry for the bad luck but...

So glad I wasnt the only one that wants to pull that gag.
I was going to wait until the first turn of the key and say hey whats this.

Hope the repair of the repair goes a lot better.
