Would 37" tires be pushing it?

Re: Would 37\" tires be pushing it?

Well ok, I should rephrase that as you better have a spare shaft at least. One time on the trail with someone with a broken axle shaft and no spare is enough for me.

But the heart of this is I think you are expecting too much from stock axles running 37" + tires. Front is one thing, but a rear 10/12 bolt is a different breed...and I did say stock, if you have some upgrades shafts in the rear you're probably alright.

Wheel what you got, yeah thats a good saying, but it shouldn't be a liability to the rest of your group your wheeling with. You also should consider what you put on your truck then as well....

Now that I wholeheartedly agree with!! /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: Would 37\" tires be pushing it?

LEt me tell you a lesson I learned. I went off-roading with some friends last year for Thanksgiving. I was really new to all this stuff. I was still really wet behind the ears. I took my blazer which I had already rebuilt the engine to our local spot. I had gone the whole day without any problems. My friends which included another S10 blazer, pathfinder, and some jeeps were amazed at the stuff I was doing. I was feeling like king of the hill. There was one last hill that no one was going on because it was too steep. I of course said "no problem" I ran that think full throttle going up and it was kicking a**. I was 2/3 the way up and guess what? This truck wouldn't move. When I got out to see what was going on I saw 2 wholes on my rear differential, oil leaking everywhere and my tires, shafts coming off. It was 11 am. to make the long story short, I had a 10 bolt rear with a 10 bolt front. I didn't make it to dinner and my tow charge was $900 dollars because it was recovery and not road assistance. It took 2 tow trucks and a whole to recover my vehicle. Since then I have invested money and bought a 14bolt ff with a locker, and now I drive as if there is a raw egg under my gas pedal. You can run this combo but carry spare parts and be really light on the gas. With $900 dollars I could have bought a Dana 60. I learned my lesson.

Re: Would 37\" tires be pushing it?

if you want to try on a set 37ssr raidils to see if you will have a pbroblem lem know i have a new set ready to go -- the ones in my webshots and i put on my 42 tsl today /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

but i would get some 1 ton stuff /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Re: Would 37\" tires be pushing it?

Run it... 37's will be fine. You might break the front if your u-joints are old and you hammer it with the wheel turned hard. If I had the chance to wheel more with my 1/2 and 3/4 ton stuff I wouldn't have gone straight to 1-ton. I tried to wheel my last rig before it went to locked 3/4 ton's but I blew up the rear 10 bolt on 32's. My current rig was bought with a grenaded 10 bolt rear so I just slapped in the 1-ton axles and called it a day. Basicly, I would have wheeled with 1/2 ton axles all day long but I had to upgrade due to major breakage (toasted ring and pinion gears) /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

Re: Would 37\" tires be pushing it?

You will be fine but,the chance of breakage is always there so get some spare shafts.I have had alot of fun for alot of years running 1/2 and 3/4 ton gear with 35" and 37" tires.

I didnt break much when I ran 37s and an Auburn.I do pretty much rocks only and have a light foot (most of the time /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif )With an ARB in my 44 I broke a few Warn shafts and joints. My last Warn axle failure took out the ball joints (second time in a row) and bent the inner C on the axle.Thats went I started looking for a 60.

My thinking was I wouldnt go Dana 60 til I was breaking stuff every trip.Big dollar breakage two trips in a row is where I called it quits /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Would 37\" tires be pushing it?

Do it, make sure you replace your axle u joints at least once a season or more and carry a spare set of shafts. Often a worn u joint leads to a broken u joint and/or axle. Also these joints are a little small so you will get un noticeable stress cracks. Religious maintenance really helps here since the strength is marginal.

Re: Would 37\" tires be pushing it?

We'll, you've seen how I wheel, I like it nice and slow- But I would also hate to be a liability for other people in my group (I dont want to be the one everyone takes pictures of!).

So basically a 10b 8 lug is no stronger than a 10B 6 lug? (well, I guess its cause the u-joints are the same) At least the brakes are slightly bigger. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I kinda like 35" tires, their cheap and plentiful.. maybe I just stick to those!

Re: Would 37\" tires be pushing it?

/forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif Well the biggest thing is the rear end, a 10 bolt rear is much worse than a 10 bolt front. Staying at 35's isn't a bad idea though, seems to work pretty reliably for most. And in the rear a FF is just nice piece of mind knowing you can break a shaft and drive off still. Its the only HD part I have on my truck /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And my working hasn't been top notch in this post, my main point though is if you run something like 37's, and especially 38"+, on a 10/12 bolt rear end you are knowingly taking a bit of a chance, and there is really no reason to take that chance in the rear when 14bff are so cheap and plentiful.

Re: Would 37\" tires be pushing it?

Yeah, figured as much- At least if you break a shaft in the front, you might be able to limp it back in 2wd. My idea was to put a detroit in the 14bsf, and an eaton in the front, off my current rear 10b. That was my idea, for the most part. I will probably not drive the truck anymore in winter, because the salt is starting to eat away at her. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Would 37\" tires be pushing it?

i wheeled 36x12.50 TSLs on my 8-lug 10bolt and a 14sf for 2 years, then i got a 14bff. never broke anything, but i dont rockcrawl.

Re: Would 37\" tires be pushing it?

I've been wheeling my 14SF for about an year now no problems. And that's under my heavy sub with 36" swampers. you'll be fine.

I ran 38.5x16 on mine and never had a problem.

Re: Would 37\" tires be pushing it?

Ive had mine for 2 years, broke a housing once, but thats a whole nother story related to bad welding. 14 SF are great, strong, semi light, and lots of rear diff options available, just the lowest gear you can go is 4.88 /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif I also run a Detroit Rear, ARB front combo and dont have any problems with breakage.

Re: Would 37\" tires be pushing it?

I run a 6lug 44 up front and a 14BFF in back...the way I see it I can afford to keep me front end weak...and if it brakes I can still drive it home with a busted front shaft. Thats why I have a 14bolt in the back...cuz If I can break that im a bigger man than I thought /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif as of yet I have had no probs and I run 38.5's and Shane74 can attest that I drive my Sh!t HARD!!
My justification is I can replace front shafts probably 10 times before its economical to go D60 /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
