Would this tie me over? - is it worth my time?

thats more expensive than a 14b.
they are a dime a dozen around here dude, check out any junkyard if you can't find one on craigslist. From Dana Point it's a drive, but I know sun valley, wilmington, morovia yards all have 3/4ton 14 bolt rear ends lying around. They will bolt right in place. Find one with a the gears you want, or buy some used ones to fit. It still comes out cheaper than $250. Hell, you could prolly find a used spool to throw in the 14b, or weld the spiders.

Or wait a week and if the ad is still up, offer them $170 cash today.

Around here I can buy a 14 bolt and swap it in for $250. If you are looking to fix a 12 bolt I would do whatever is cheapest, like an open diff.

That's for a car 12 bolt, which unless I'm mistaken (and I don't think i am) is different from the truck 12 bolt. It most likely wouldn't work for you anyways...

The car and truck 12 bolts use the same carrier. For some inexplicable reason, the truck 12 bolts use smaller pinion bearings and also use a different ring and pinion setup.

And to those suggesting that a 14 bolt swap is cheaper than this diff, don't forget that often you'll need to move perches, find 8 lug outers for the front, get new wheels, etc. Easy to eclipse $250.

Having said that, if you can't afford the 14 bolt swap I would put the $250 in the piggybank rather than spend it on a 12 bolt posi if you know you want to upgrade in the future.

There ya go...I knew someone that knew the exact differences would chime in.

I tend to agree with 383. Better to put that $250 aside and be a little more patient I think. Hell, if the current 12 bolt is a known "Temporary" thing why not just weld it for now while you put some $$ aside?

Yea, you better read the ad a little closer. This is a car axle they are talking about.

OK thanks for the input,I did read the ad but I did not know there was a difference and that's why I was asking. As far as welding the 12 bolt I don't really know what to weld to make it work.

Weld the side gears to the carrier, that way at least you can still pull the C-clips and change an axle if needed.
