Would you use an app for us gearheads that calculated speed, mph, dynamic compression, etc...

I am thinking about creating an app for us gearheads, kind of like the spreadsheets I left in the center of gravity forum that calculate speed or MPH vs tire size and gearing, engine compression, dynamic engine compression (along with other engine calcs like estimated CFM flow, piston speed, wrist pin height, etc.). I've left those spreadsheets available to download there.

Anyway, I am wondering if there is interest in an app and what its worth to people. I like to use the spreadsheets, but sometimes it's just more convenient to have an app on your phone. However, it would take considerable time so I am just trying to gauge interest to see whether it's worth it or not. So please be honest in the poll. If you see this poll and then navigate away without voting, the results won't be correct, please just click "no". I'm trying to get a gauge of what percentage of us gearheads would use something like this. So even the not interested votes are useful.

Also, please mention anything you want it to be able to do that's not in the spreadsheets. Just for reference I have attached some screen captures of the spreadsheets and what they do...

Thank you,

Heath

I would use it but only if you add two more features. Torque conversion calculators and fraction to decimal charts. Without those features I wouldn't use the others enough to justify it. I only keep apps on my phone I actually use. Its all simple stuff I could easily google, but having a one stop shop for all of this quick info would be nice. I would pay for that convenience

  1. All of my torque wrenches are in In-lbs. Every time I go to torque something that has another unit of measurement I have to convert it. I currently use a janky ad ridden app that gets the job done but has issues.
  2. A simple chart that has 1/8 = .125 and so on.

I voted no but mostly because, like you, I put most of the formulas I need into spreadsheets way back when.
I have looked over your spreadsheets and they are well done, so I can see you being successful with an app.
Good luck with it.

& We'll completely ignore the fact that its harder to read spreadsheets on a phone every year (I'm in the Smokey & the Bandit on VHS crowd)...

I think these are good ideas. A torque wrench converter and tap drill sizes are especially useful in the shop at times.

I'm curious to hear more.

And I agree, I still use these spreadsheets on my phone on occasion, but its rather annoying if I need to put any numbers into them to get the result.

:D
I voted no because I don't use any of that stuff enough to have an app, even for free.
I have enough apps for work that I need to clean any unnecessary app.
And I am same vhs generation :waytogo:

Torque specs seem to be what cause me to have to come inside most often to use the laptop during garage time.

I have written a spreadsheet for engineering purposes that I have not shared that calculates torque specs based on the thread size and pitch, material grade, and lubricant used. I could likely include that, However, I would not use it to replace listed torque specs for gasketed surfaces or bearing cap fasteners, etc. It's more of a general torque spec for a metal to metal joint. Does that sound useful?

I have started the project. More input would be welcome as I create the app.

Well, I have released the apps to the play store. I ended up spending way more time than I expected on this so I split it up into 5 different apps. I will consider changing what apps include what or the cost depending on the feedback. Basically there are 5 apps , one is free and the largest one is $5.49 (I tried to set it to 5.55 but the play store changed it to 5.49 for some reason) with a few in between around $2. Anyway, I added a page to my website to cover the app differences and where to get it. None of them have any adds or special permissions, just simple apps that work.

It's been less than 24 hours so the apps aren't even searchable yet, but they are there. There are links to the play store on my webpage.

FYI, I anyone who previously replied to this thread to give feedback will get a free copy of a special CK5 app (it's basically the $5 Pro version with a special icon). This one is not available on the play store but I can PM it to you I believe, just send me a PM if you want it. I will only have it available for download for a short time period. I just ask that you give me any feedback on it if I can fix anything and if you like it, please rate it in the play store.

@Greg72 you get a free copy too since i used part of a picture of your wheel from your build in the icon. I thought it was representative of CK5 and fit my icon theme.

I have a Sam Dung for my ProFlo. I’ll give it a spin.

In the meantime I sent the link on google play to my axle guy....

Thanks @folkenheath

The view comparison chart button doesn’t work. Or at least it didn’t take me to the chart.

Thanks, I had fixed that yesterday but when I made an update apparently it erased it since I had to paste the code in manually to fix it.

It should work now.

I don't know any programming code, so I have to rely on software to create this stuff.

That’s cuz apples better. That’s how they keep the doctor away.

I love apple products for build quality. But I am tired of how prices are getting out of hand, also their anti repair attitude is unacceptable. They will have customs seize packages going to third party repair facilities if they think it will have an OE or counterfeit apple repair component in it. Even for products they no longer support themselves. $1000 bucks for a phone without a headphone jack. Ill stick with my $300 Chinese android that has the same screen resolution, storage, and cpu speed.

Not disagreeing, but not trying to turn this thread into a bash apple thread. Was just making a joke.
