WOW! Bending 2" X .125 wall DOM manually is not fun.

Im going to start my cage since Im off work for 2 weeks vacation. Bent 1 90 deg. bend with the 2" .125 DOM tube I bought and DAMN! this stuff is tough to bend. I have about 7 feet of cheater on my bender too. Looks like I need either more cheater length or do a hydro conversion. For now I will be getting a hell of a work out :( :doah:.

Thats why Im going with 1 3/4. It only took 2 months to get my die. Now itll take 6 months to save up for material.:doah:

All I can say is if there was ever a test to see the difference of the strength between HREW tube and DOM just bend the same wall thickness of each and you will see for yourself. My 2" die did not crimp the inside of the radius on the DOM half as bad as HREW tube does. DOM had way more spring back too.

I bet 1 3/4 DOM wont be all that much different. I think 1 3/4 DOM is still tougher to bend then 2" HREW for sure. the chips from my band saw cutting HREW compared to DOM is quite a bit different too. Curious as to how it welds.

I built my cage, 3 hoops, out of 2"x.125 DOM. 8' cheater bar. It was also 110 degrees in So. Ca. when I built it. Lost at least 20lbs of sweat. It is worth it for the security. With the weight of these trucks, a high speed go over could collapse a small cage. I talked to a number of race truck builders before I did mine.

Some pictures before completion. Sorry about the size. I can build a truck, but my computer skills suck.

ktmoutfront,

got any more pics of how it ties to the body or frame?

Try warming it up to red. It won't jeopardize the strength, much easier to bend. Ox/ace might be too quick. I'd recommend MAPP gas.

I will give that a try, only problem is by the time you get set up to bend it has cooled down. If its warm at all it will help though. Its hard to heat tube in the bender. you can't really get to where you need to heat. Right now with the cool weather is not the time to be doing this, but its vacation so I can make a good dent in the cage build hopefully. Ofcourse its windy as hell today . I hope it dies down.

Cold weather? What is it, 60d out. It is 9d here today.

Heating the bend area is not a great idea because you can not keep the entire area the same temp. The minute you set the tubing into the die, the die sucks the heat out of the tubing. I tried, it did not do any good. I will try to get pictures posted of the frame tie in.

Thats true, I forgot about that. yes it will cool it right down. Yes it is 60 here today, bbbuuurrr :D

ktmoutfront,

I like the windshield frame you did. neat looking.

rdn2blazer,

I hate you. I went 11 days w/o power because of an ice storm and you complaining about 60*? Silly surfer boys. Don't heat it for the bender. However, if you cap one end and fill it with sand you can bend it with heat and not crease it. Bend by hand of course, not bender. Either way it's work. You need your feminine figure back anyway. :D

<---former Caliman, so I have earned the right to hate the State. Which is also why I'm from it oddly enough.

Rob,

What bender are you using, a JD2 type? Also, are you running a 180 degree die or 90, or maybe you have both?

heating it and working fast may indeed make it easier, but that doesn't make it better. The bender will act as a heat sink on one side of the tubing, cooling it down much faster than the other side. When you begin the bend, this will cause the hotter side to stretch more, thinning out the wall needlessly. Will it work for the bend, yes. Will it work in a roll, maybe, maybe not. It's too much of a crap shoot imho for a safety item. A little hard work never killed anyone that wasn't used to it.

My buddy Matt bent 1.5" .250 DOM in a manual bender. Took 2 guys and some decent work but it did it. It did slightly bend the pins in the bender though. :D
