So I knew i needed to redo the exhaust on the m1009. no big deal I kinda like doing exhaust. I also needed to track down a metal on metal grinding sound that would occur when i went over a dip or bump. Now I admit I have done some things that have been stupid before but I think this takes the cake in beyond redneck repairs. While doing the oil change I came across what was causing the metal on metal grinding sound...

..I was a bit shocked at seeing this as any stupid thing i have done has never compromised my driveline like this has. Wow. On a sidenote since I have to swap out exhaust and have read that straight through mufflers work good on diesel's, would the bullet style magnaflows like this work without any issue? It's 2.5 in/out.

I had Cherry Bombs on Big Ugly and they worked fine. Some on here claim the fiberglass packing will pack up with diesel soot and eventually they'll fail but mine were fine for 3 years. Also, most of the big name diesel places that make exhaust kits (Banks for instance) use straight through mufflers.

So they just had the muffler hanging there loose and it was tilting in towards the center?:doah:

I have Thrush cherry bomb glass packs on my 6.2 and they sound cool, not obnoxious at all,and much like a 350 would sound with them..

Your driveshaft shot reminds me of the time my friend who was clueless about cars, had the muffler on his '68 LTD fall down one day when a hangar broke, and he crawled under it ,and saw the muffler hanging, dragging on the pavement--and a passer by suggested using a coathanger to tie it back up temporarily till he could get it fixed..he did just that, then headed to my house 15 miles away..when he arrived,he said "man, all the way up here I heard a weird scraping noise, and people were blowing their horns at me for no reason"..

I got under the car,and saw he had wrapped the coathanger around the DRIVESHAFT!'':doah:..and it had almost cut it neatly in two,it had about 1/32nd of an inch left to go,before it would have separated!.....I only had torches back then,no welder,so I put a nice "bead" of brazing rod all the way around the shaft--it lasted 2 more years, but it grumbled and rumbled at highway speed from that day on!--I think it either bent some or I threw the balance off by brazing it..

Another day with the same car,the kid decided to try putting in spark plugs by himself,I figured a '68 TTD with a 289 V8 shouldn't be too hard even for a doofus to chage..when he pulled in my yard with it running on 7 cylinders and backfiring like a cannon,I figured he screwed the diring order up (though I HAD told him to do only one wire and plug at a time!)--when I opened the hood,I saw someone had blocked off a failed smog tube that went to the exhaust manifold,by removing it and screwing an old spark plug in the hole--and yup,you guessed it,he put the plug wire on THAT spark plyg instead of the one in the nearest cylinder!..the muffler I had replaced about 2 weeks previously was blown apart and he was blaming ME for doing a "lousy job" of installing it.....

I use dual 2.5 inch exhaust with thrush flowmaster style mufflers i got at A&A for $25 a peice. i love the power increase and sound! not loud at part throttle but u can definitly hear it under a good load!
