Wrench's Engine Thread

Just an update, I've decided to leave the 6.2 in the truck for now as I need to get this thing running again for work. If you've seen my build thread I'm swapping the cab and putting in an NV4500 as well. That way I can take my time and build this engine exactly the way I want it, then drop it in at a later date. I'll keep updating as I progress, but there might be long intervals between.

Thanks for all the input, it's all going into making this little rat a firebreather

Another update--you guys have the right to laugh if you like . . .

I knocked the old cab off my truck yesterday and today I looked up the casting numbers on my engine block:o. The block is a 10237141, date code E016--it's a 1996 6.5 block with the mechanical IP on it.

So much for my 6.5 swap--now it's a moot point  Guess I'll inspect it for cracks, and if it's fine I'll throw my girdle kit on it just to make sure it stays healthy while I build the other block . . . or something. . . jeepers, I was going to run my "6.2" until it dropped while I built the 6.5, but I don't want to blow a 6.5 block if it's crack free . . . indecision, indecision . . .:haha:

well, today was a very good day. I opened up my 141 block (the one in my truck) and discovered that it is 100% crack free, as are the heads. I was starting to wonder if a crack free 6.5 existed. Not only that, but the cylinder wall surfaces are still around 60-70% cross hatched, so this is a fairly fresh block. Bore diameter is 102.96mm midway down, so it's also original bore. With proper care, this block should give me the remainder of my lifetime in service.

Now I just have to put it all back together with the serpentine system, girdle kit, head studs, and turbo . . .

Sweet deal!

Hey, can you pop the heads off that 6.5L I sold you and take a look and see what kind of condition they are in? I think I might need to buy them back off you if they are good since my 6.2L heads are infact coarse threaded heads, and the injectors / lines hit the turbo manifold. That, and one of the injectors was badly crossthreaded by the PO and is useless now anyways.

You bet, I saw your post this morning and figured I'd check on them and make the same offer. One head has a hairline crack between the I and E valves on the two end cylinders, the other head has no cracks at all. No cracking in the precups at all and no cracking anywhere else. I also have another set that's close to the same, maybe a bit better than the worse one from your block. You're welcome to pick the best pair, they're all the same casting number--$100 or make an offer?

Well, my little diesel rat is running pretty nicely now, think I need to set the injection timing properly, but does well anyway.

It's definitely underfueled with the original pump, even though I turned it up a hair--1/8th turn? No smoke at all ever, and max of 5psi boost running empty. I 'spect with a load that'll go up, but I want to install a pyro before I crank up fuel too much.

I'll be taking it down to southern Alberta this weekend, so we'll see how everything runs then. Still rigging the dash/instruments, so it's a bit haywire in there, but everything's working.

Nicely done! Definitely beat me!

I'm hung up on what heads I should buy for my engine... Debating between a set of brand new DSGs, and a set of used ones that have had the sleeve repair done for the cracks...

New are 800, used are 400
