Putting a feeler out there for a 14 bolt SF with 6 lugs that I could bolt into a 1987 GMC shortbed 4x4. Planning on light to moderate wheeling, 4" lift, 33s but in the future 35s probably. Trying to avoid the 60/14FF swap due to financial reasons. If I could score a 6 lug 14SF with 4.10s on the cheap, may be the utlimate penny saver for me in the time being. Then I could just get the front regeared and have some fun with a little more peace of mind then the 10 bolts.

Located in LA, so local/driving distance would be nice to pick it up. I also will be asking for advice from the forums on this since just renewing my membership.

Thanks!

If you can only find a SF 8 lug I have some Superior 6 lug axle shaft and a disk brake conversion for sale. I also have a carrier and 4:10 gears also.

I just read in 4 Wheel & Off Road that regarding the 14 bolt SF, the 6 lug axles do not fit in an 8 lug axle assembly.

What years??? I ran a set of Superior 6 lug axles shafts in my 14SF 8 lug axle for years.

Got a 8 lug SF14 for sale in huntington beach. 5-600 buck price range. Need it gone in 3 days... comes with ugly but great running 1990 suburban...

hahah....if I didnt already have one truck I need to juggle daily for this damn street parking with different days they try to nail you for being on the wrong side, Id consider a strong running Burb :-)

I'll see what gears are in scouthead's 'burb after I get it home. Maybe we can work something out if I swap in a 14ff. You wouldn't be interested in a full 8-lug swap with 3/4ton stuff (w/ 4.10 gears) from Carl's 'burb? Front end wouldn't really be any stronger, but you'd get bigger brakes and the stronger rear outta the deal. Of course, I think the 14ff does mean less ground clearance than a 14sf. It's your truck, so it's up to you.:dunno:

You know Ive been so resistant to the 8 lug stuff...but also been pricing out regearing the 10 bolts etc...or doing a 6 lug 14 bolt SF rear, regearing the front etc....I think despite me being so stubborn about keeping my rims and tires, that when I get the cash the 8 lug one ton swap might end up being the way to go...

So you bought his Burb???? How many trucks do you have NOW!!! haha
I talked to a junkyard yesterday that has CUCV axles coming in, under 100k miles, so it would be 4.56 plus the Detroit in the back and the 60 does have a Trak Lok (he thinks but needs to confirm). $2200, but I dont know if there is wiggle room....thing is I sorta was saving up so when I found a 6 lug SF 14, or axles to swap, I might have the money...as well wantedt to get a custom brush guard made to mount my winch and lights....but the past few weeks my insurance company denied some of my doctors bills (the usual), so I had to pay a few grand out of pocket....with my damn truck money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So I know this isnt a political thread, but trust me if Obamacare would be anything like what I have to deal with for workers comp disability insurance through my old police department-you want nothing to do with it....they deny deny deny, delay delay delay, ignore and pretend they do not get your phone calls or emails, and always have an excuse...they gave me a list of doctors that included OBGYNs to see??!?!?!?!?! Whatever slap crap doctors need patients and suck are probably the ones who volunteer to be on these private company workers comp lists just so they get some income.

So right now Im screwed as far as cash to buy anything and get it installed...and if I did go to 8 lug Id need another good chunk of change for new rims and tires...although Id hope I could salvage some money out of the Centerline Rims and brand new Baja Claw 33s I have on it now.

Oh, the junkyard said they had rollers they could let me have if I did get the CUCV axles so I could still drive it until I bought new rims and tires.

Ok, thanks for letting me vent...probably not the right place...but chapping my ass I just want to buy parts for this truck, not spend it on doctors.

WOW! Forget I asked.:eek1::doah: Just kidding, dude. Sucks to hear about all the Dr. crap. I was merely mentioning it cuz Carl has a set of 3/4 ton axles that would fit right in your rig with 4.10s for about $350. Some guy is supposed to come look today, but haven't seen him show up yet. That's cheaper than regearing your front axle. Do you have 3.73 now, or is it something crappy like 3.08?
BTW, to your question of how many trucks I have now.....all of them.:haha:

HAAHA.....and yes if my glovebox is right, I have 3.08...and last weekend just driving up the highway to Big Bear, I imagine thats correct...she is nice around town and perfect for flat highway driving, but was hurting driving up to Big Bear...so imagine its still 3.08.

I was wishful thinking I could find a cheap 6 lug out of an 88-91 burb, and maybe get both axles for 4.10 6 lug out of it and keep my rims and tires on the cheap....or I tossed around regearing the 10 bolts with a locker and or posi, but that even at the cheapest quote is more than a set of one tons would cost....and if I found a good 6 lug rearend and it wasnt straight from a burb, Id have to pay to get the spring pads moved, shock mounts, etc, and still regear the front...so Id still be spending a good chunk of money since quotes for regearing alone that I called places is $1300-1500 per axle, and some of them were quotes without any locker or posi included! crap...at that point I might as well get the 6 lug rims and tires pried out of my hands, and just suck up a set of one tons, and get new rims and tires...

Until I figure out some medical stuff Im not gonna have much to spend...so if they are 8 lug rims Id still be short on cash for the tires and rims right now. But 4.10 would be NICE!!!!

That's the kind of number-crunching that leads people to buying a set of stock axles in a better ratio and being done with it. My truck is a K20 that came stock with 4.56s, so I didn't have to shop around, but 3.08s suck ass. IMO, 1 tons are really wasted if you're never gonna run more than 35s on it anyway. I'm running 36s, that are actually over 37" tall, with a D44 and 14ff, and the only problem I've had with the axles is that the front one looks like it's smiling.:doah: Maybe I shouldn't have jumped it so much.:o I haven't looked at the ratio in the 14sf in that burb, but you could probably find a cheap 10b front in 3.73 at least, which is what I expect to find in that axle. A rear 10B isn't even that bad if you use alloy shafts and a locker, but then you're spending more money again.
This is one of those stories that has played out at least a thousand times around this site. It's all up to how hard you want to beat it and how much you want to spend.

Check this out and let me know what you think. It would be a 5.5 hour drive for me, but its a Dana 44 4.56 ARB with chromolly shafts, and a 12 bolt rear with 4.56 ARB and chromolly shafts. $1300...$1500 with the compressor. Said I would just need to have someone measure up the spring perches and put them in the right place, and figure out the pinion angle to set them at. They came out of a K5, he put them in a CJ, but is swapping to one tons.

Well, the front would probably be OK if he didn't modify the cast spring perch. IIRC, the rear has been narrowed if it's really 63" like he says.:doah: Since you have a 10b rear, you couldn't even swap the ARB into your housing. As far as the price for those parts, it's a good deal. Measure the width on your rear axle to see if it's wider than 63" to be sure. Moving perches on the rear is easy.
