Take the alt to a Advanced/AutoZone/etc that tests them for free and have them test it. Cheap insurance.

Since I can do a defect exchange I'll just swap it to be safe.
Eh, no guarantee there's something wrong with this one and the next one will be good. I've bought a bad new alternator before.
