WTF is wrong with people?? ROTD

I should go into the Dana 60 business...

A Dana 60 front axle isnt that difficult to score around here--I see at least one 1 ton 4x4 in my junkyard jaunts locally every time I go--most of them get stuffed in the crusher, even though the salvage yard owners know they are bringing good money--the thing is not that many people are into fixing up older trucks here anymore--most of them have the cash to buy one already built up the way they want it..not that many calls for a Dana 60 according to the owner of one yard I go to often--..

He says they dont ever go bad that often,so not many people need one..,or the ratio is wrong,or they want a matching ratio rear end too,and its not available(they sell tons of rear axles)--I could have bought 2 of them for about 400 bucks if I had the cash!....They aren't into shipping them all over the country--its not profitable enough--too bad they couldn't get a new england to AZ connection going..seems like they all go to waste here.... :frown1:

That would be great if we could get some good shipping deals from Ma to Az, but i doubt it would work. I can't believe that they put those things in the crusher! :screwy: How much is a d60/14blt up there in New England? Maybe it would be worth shipping....

Hmm, going back to Mass here in about a month for a couple weeks. Think they'll let me bring it on the plane?

Find someone to stock pile them on the East coast then do a trip and go get a lot of them, I would be up for the trip. Take unrusted old cars back east and needed d60 back west sounds like a new business. I met a guy when I was in AZ who came down from Canada somewhere back east side of the country and he bought gas tanks then sold them back home and made a good deal of money doing it. Most wrecking yard had to take them out anyway so he was almost doing them a favor.

i don't understand why they are so expensive either??

mine just cost me labor to swap them over from the donor vehicle!!

It sounds like you're looking in the WRONG places.

I just bought my k30 for $1000...witha 60.
I never have paid more than $1000 for one.

Just look around...you'll find one that isn't pricey. :cool1:
Time and patients is the key. ;)

LOL...Go ahead...Boycott them..it just means more 60's for me!!!!

Tell that guy to just set the axles aside at the least. Theres nothing wrong with a pile of GM D60f's.... except the fact that it's not my pile.

Are we going into overkill range then? I mean is a 60 really necessary for anything under a 39" tire? If it's a comp buggy or something then yes I can see the need. But for those of us running hobbiest type rigs (even if it does see pretty serious action), have we pushed ourselves into thinking we NEED a D60 front, thus driving the demand and prices up?

I almost agree with trcksR4me. I'm tempted to find a set of rockwells and go that route. Those should never break!!

Could you theoretically upgrade the components in your 44 and have nealy the same strength as a basically stock 60? Probably be a hell lot cheaper as well.

Overkill ? .... Probably in most cases. Not all, but some, or a lot. I know I could probably make smaller axles work fine with my future set up... but I don't want to take the chance. I want to have the peace of mind. But, it's not just axles that people overkill on.. theres plenty of other stuff too. As someone who is building the truck you have to weigh what is needed .. and what you are paying too much for, for some peace of mind.. or whatever. There are many things that are often done to rigs, that are popular.. and I won't incorporate them into my build up. I think some people lose focus on what they wanted, and it ends up a "popularity contest.. or a they have that, I need it too" thing. Some things I do need, and some things, that people think are a must, I will not waste my time or money on. It can be done without them.. If I'm wrong about needing a certain item, then I can always add it later. Sometimes if the item is not that costly.. and I'm needing to replace something in or around it.. I may upgrade at the time, simply because it's easier now. Some certain parts of a build, are often a must.. you just always have to remember to focus on what you're doing, and what you need... not what everyone else is doing or running.

In a nutshell.. rigs can still be well built, even if they don't have EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE COOL KID PARTS.

Oh, almost forgot, I'm not too sure that the D44 can be upgraded to the same strength for cheaper. Probably more like, for about the same money.

I think location is key too. We definitely seem to live in the cheap 60 capital of the U.S.

When I found mine I wasn't even looking. I just wanted to get a D44 or 10 bolt to upgrade from my D44 with drums. But when 60's can be had for D44 prices, you can't say no. :D

Actually I've seen some Rockwells CHEAPER than some 60's....

Yep, about $800 to $1200 for a matched set. No need to regear either, and it would cost more to build a D60 than it would to fit Rockwells in our trucks.

Yah....we're spoiled!!!! :o

Both of us traveled a total of 10 miles to find ours...or in my case...
a couple spares. :D :D

Speeking of Rockwells...they're cheap around here too.. $800 a set.

Supply and demand dude. If some one wants it bad enough to pay that much why shouldn't he ask that much?

Rockwell's sound interesting, but what are the weight differences?
