WTF \"PICS ADDED\"

So we bought this chev y from a farmer and it seems to be changed. My friend has some questions about it so I will post it on here to insure I dont lead him in the wrong direction

"I just started tearing my 1971 K10 project apart. I opened the rear diff to start cleaning it up and found it wasn't opened, but had a posi or locker of some kind. We started looking closer and found the axle perches are 2" wide (from a car?) instead of 2 1/2" and have some really bad welds on them as well as the shock mounts. But what I really need help with is the gears in the rear, a 12 bolt, but the gears are stamped with a 3/83 manufacture date. So if anyone can help...PLEASE?!?!? Oh yeah the whole gear stamp if anyone can decode it: 1 GM 339635 11 41 3 83. I'll post pictures of the posi lookin thing when I get to work tomarrow. "

The questions we have are

Do they stamp replacement gears with thier production date?

Would there be a factory posi with replacement gears in 83 (the gears have a GM stamp on them so we know they are GM but 12 bolts stopped in 81)

Are cars rearends the same width as trucks?

What dumba$$ would weld 2 inch wide perches on when the springs are 2.5 inches long?

I think those are it thanks for the help.

Re: WTF

the 41 and 11 on the ring tell us thats a 3.73ratio.

Thats about all the insight I can really give.

I'm not sure what car it would be from, the WMS to WMS would be WAY too narrow, possibly they pooched the old spring mounts and just welded new ones on?

Not neccessarily(sp?). GM just kinda phased them out, so it's possible to find them after 81, although they are few and far between... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: WTF

i though they got rid of the 12 bolt in 82, it could have been a factory replace ment gears though.

is it a 12 bolt car or truck rear end? the covers are different, car is more round, truck is almost diamond shaped

Re: WTF

If you want ot know if its a car or truck rear end thats easy. If the posi has 1 big opening and 1 small hole opening on the other side, its a car. 1 big opening on one side and another big opening on the other side, truck.

Re: WTF \"PICS ADDED\"

We know its 3.73's. Thanks for the confirmation though. With these pics maybe you guys can tell me what it is. I think a posi or govlock??

Truck 12 bolt with a Gov-bomb...

Re: WTF \"PICS ADDED\"

It is no doubt a 12 bolt truck axle with a govloc. It could actually also be an older hosing and newer carrier, or some other frankenstein thing with the spring perches coming from somewhere /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

Re: WTF

My brother-in-law's '91 1/2ton Z71 has a 12bolt rearend.

Not from the factory. It's either swapped in from an older truck or it's actually a 10-bolt or 14-bolt s/f. Do you know the history of the vehicle?
